This is the setup I'm using for my puppets...It's universal so the rods will pop out quickly for use on another puppet, which means I only need as many sets of rods as I have puppeteers....
The black post is a sheath for wheels on a bed, I cut it down to an inch and a half on the miter saw,then its glued to the wrist of the foam hand(the next puppet I will actually elongate the wrist and bury the sleeve into a hollowed out portion of hand).
As you can see the dowel seats perfectly inside creating an air tight seal. The dowel will be cut above the blue line so you will never see any dowel when the rod is inserted and the puppet is being operated. This short piece of dowel(about an inch an a half) will be center bored through the diameter of the shaft. This hole will then be filled with a chemical anchor and the piano wire will be inserted into the shaft.(I once installed a vacuum lift which weighed roughly a ton and was rated to pick up around 175lbs. by drilling holes into a solid concrete floor, filling said holes with a chemical anchor, then placing threading rods into the epoxy. After 24hours the lift was bolted onto the threads and was held in place only by the chemical anchor.)
The end product would be something similar to to whats above, with the exception of the wood dowel you see will be a piece of 3/32 piano wire dipped in flat black paint. As for the user end of the handle, I'm not quite sure what I want yet, but woodworking is one of my primary mediums, so I'm sure I'll figure out my own take on the handle.
Overall cost is around $12 for two complete rod sets with wrist sleeves.

Hey Scuba I use mainly the piono wire which I cut into 21 inches long and then I the wooden handle is about 3 inches long. I then drill a hole in the dowel at one end of the circle end (whichever) in the centre about an inch into it, the same size as the wire I used. I then goop in some epoxy and let it dry.....again I mainly cover the rod with black shrink tubing and paint the handle black (usually before I attach it to the wire) but the last two things are optional. This is not a orginal idea but it works great and does the job and all the materials are readily avaialble for most people. As a puppeteer I use them and really like them alot.....BTW some handles are square in shape...I do not perfer them they seem to get caught around each other and some actions are a bit tricky to do with the square ones over the round wooden handles.
