Here is a brief demonstration of the bird puppet I am making for Peter and the Wolf. My right hand is below the frame, pulling on some fish line that goes into the puppet through the birdie's belly.
These are the majority of the pieces to make the bird. I'll use fleece to cover the body, and Foamie to make the wings and tail. The wing and tail pieces shown are just the patterns that I will use to trace onto the foamie. The body is made out of 1/4" foam.
The amber piece is the bottom of a plastic prescription bottle. It provides structure so that the bird doesn't collapse in on itself. I ended up using duck tape as a hinge between the two wing struts (tongue depressors). Elastic goes from the upper side of the wing struts through a hole in the pill bottle, to move the wings into a "down" position. Tugging on fish line moves the wings into the "up" position. Releasing the line returns the wings to the "down" position.
The puppet will be mounted on a 36" Piano wire rod, which will have a handle at the bottom and a trigger mechanism to which the control string will be fastened. During a portion of the play, the bird is perched on a tree limb, so I will bend a curve into the rod that fits over the tree branch. That way the puppeteer will be able to "perch" the bird on the branch and the curve will keep the bird steady in the same position.
