Can I Dye This Fabric Black? Posted by Rosie H on Sep 16, 2009
Hi, may seem a simple question, but if I get some black dye can I dye this fabric. I bought it online so I'm not sure what the heck it is made of, lol. I love the color but as soon as I saw it I thought it would make really nice hair. Thoughts anyone?

You can buy that fabric in black. I have used it for hair and it is great.
I think it has some polyester in it, so not sure it will take dye well.

Figured you might, but I bought the single piece online thinking I would use it for a monster puppet, cant buy it here, but it would be great for hair. Not sure what it's made of, do you know what it's called?

BTW, thanks for your links Billy, I just wish I knew what it was made of.

Thank you Billy, pretty expensive stuff too. I got 1 yard at 60" wide for just $5. Great deal.

"100% Polyester"... that is going to be hard to dye.    Here is a thought that might work although it would take some time to do.  What if you used permanent sharpie markers to color it. In fact if you used a black and a brown you may come up with an interesting two (actually three) tone color.

Has anyone ever tried black shoe dye ? I guess you will have to do some test strips and lets us know how it turns out.................. Take pictures so we can see the differences.

It makes great looking puppets. Very messy, little pieces flying around, but fun.

Well I tried the suggestions above... Shawn, there's too much pile to be able to do that, though I suspect it would have worked if Sharpie made a marker to end all markers, lol, like maybe 2" wide . And Billy I have some black leather shoe dye that comes with a foam applicator, I tried that and it's on the line drying. It still kinda looks reddish, but now more of a purply red, I may have to wash it when it dries, not sure how this will work out, but I will post pictures later.

Well, it's back to making itty bitty clothes!

Ms. Puppet, yes, that's why I bought it originally, but when I saw it I thought "hair!", my other method I use to make Ben's hair is really great and 'dread' looking but too time consuming. It's so much easier to make yarn hair for girls than boys it seems, there's a lot of cheating that can be done in making a pony tail, lol.
