Puppet Copy for Posters and Flyers Posted by Rosie H on Oct 01, 2009
Hi Everyone,
Right now I'm working on making a business set in Adobe InDesign. I'm designing bizcards, posters, newsletters (electronic), envelopes, letterheads, labels and cdvd and their cases, phew. Designing is no problem but I'm coming up blank when it comes to sharp and to the point copy for the poster and newsletter. I want the text to be catchy and not waffley. Will it just come to me at some point or does anyone know somewhere online where I can get info on why ppl should buy puppets. I'm aiming at regular ppl that want one for the kids, and organizations like church's and schools etc.

Well, I've been working on the copy for my puppets, it's hard work but I'm doing it.
Also, I added a little banner to my craft blog that redirects to my etsy shop.

For some reason I had thought that I replied to this thread already. Copy is not one of my strong points. I know that it is important when it comes to the internet since that is one thing that can get you listed correctly in the search engines. I don't know of any place that gives you references for this about the best thing is to look at other sites and learn from what they are doing. Perhaps if you approach it from a web masters point of view and start with keywords. While I know that SE's don't put as much emphasis on them in the head anymore I do think they are a good way to get started in thinking about the content you might want to use. I would be somewhat like making an outline. As I am writing this I realized that you said posters and flyers but the concepts still apply I think.
I would like to point out to others that you are doing all the right things when it comes to promoting yourself on the web. Look at Rosie's signature folks. See all those sites. Have you noticed that many of then are to web services on the web? Sites like wordpress.com and flickr.com and even etsy.com have large user bases already. By using them or posting on them you increase your chances that you'll get noticed. Rosie has also found a site that is specific to puppetry (Puppets and Stuff) and become an active member. She has used the profile here and her signature to help promote herself. This is a good thing! Now I don't want you to simply go out there and join sites and post your info then never go back. That is likely to be seen as spam and be deleted. You need to be an active member. Not only does it help you out in the automatic system of search engines but it gets you seen by real people that see you posting and get to know you.
Sorry Rosie, didn't mean to hijack your question but thought it was important to point out. I bet as a web master you can ad even more details and ideas in this area.

I know this thread's no longer new, but I haven't been on the site for a while and have a suggestion for anyone that needs help with copy.
I have a book I often use for help and inspiration when writing copy, it's called "Words That Sell" by Richard Bayan. It's an easy to use guide that offers some basic copy writing help plus many topical lists of phrases and words you can use and adapt for a given situation (and most are easily customizable for different businesses and uses). I highly recommend it to anyone. I think there may be a sequel with additional help as well.
