Cat wiskers Posted by gav on Oct 04, 2009
I'm working on a Cheshire cat puppet. and I'm pretty much done with the head. The only thing I haven't added where the whiskers. What do most people use for wiskers? Also whats the best way to put them on the puppet?

Hi Gav,
I use fishing line. It comes in different sizes (Thickness). Or you can use weed wacker line from the hardware store. It also comes in different sizes. To attach it I take a small nail and poke a hole through the fabric and in to the foam and glue it in. You can glue it to the out side if your using the thin stuff.
Hope that helps,
Mike

I agree withMike or you can buy whiskers already made especially around Halloween

You've probably already made your whiskers, but in case not, here's another possibility.
If you know someone with a horse, particularly a horse with a white tail and mane that they trim periodically, you may want to experiment with using this coarse white hair as your whiskers. Some of the hairs are much thicker than others, and being white, they catch the light well.
After cleaning them well with soap and water, I attach the horse hairs individually to leather masks by making deep 'hair folicles' with a sharp, blunt tool such as a beltmakers' fid. Then I put a bit of white glue on the stiffer end of the hair and insert it into the deep 'folicle'. Once it's dry, it's very stable. If the whiskers pull out or bend over time, they are quite easy to replace if you have a small supply of horse hairs to choose from.
I tried fishing line also, but was much happier with the horse hair whiskers.
