I Need Help With a Costume Posted by LittleLovables on Oct 28, 2009
I know this isn't *technically* a puppet, but seeing how it needs to move with the body and I'm using fleece and foam, I thought only you all would be able to give some tips.

I stayed up all night making a Sonic the Hedghog costume for my 3 year old. Of course, he was in bed, so *in theory* it worked and looks awesome. But now that I am fitting it too him, the foam I used for the spikes is way too heavy and falls off or sways way to the side (which I should have known while I was making it, just got into the moment)!

I thought about inserting wire, but I hotglued  the whole thing and not sure if I can even open it up to get it in there. I also thought about adding a belt piece to help stabilize it, but the top would still fall, I am quite certain.

I may just have to make just a little hat piece and add fabric only spikes to that, but have no idea how to start... what a waste!

I can never figure out how to post photos here, so I just put them in my flickr. I'll try and figure it out in a sec:

Any ideas?

i was wondering if you could attach fabric belts like you mentioned to either sides of the back spikes and securing with Velcro to the back of the costume acting as something like a anchor........ just a thought! Your son is adorable.

You first have to add images to your gallery album here at P&S............ Once you do this all you have to do is click on gallery image at the bottom of each post and upload the images from your P&S gallery images. Hopes this helps!

That is a good idea.  Or triangle pieces of foam on either side of each spike to support it (like bookends), then covering it with fabric?

I was trying to stay away from attaching anything to the shirt, so I could easily remove it so he could get in the carseat, but he could always take it off when it's time to get in the car.

Oh, and I did upload them to my gallery, but when I tried searching for them to post them, I couldn't find my album, I'll try again.

A piece of elastic from the front neck elastic (I think it is elastic) that goes back to the first spike on each side might help. You would have a Y on each side of sorts then.  Also from about the center of the second spike to the shoulder bands might also help.

Personally I would not worry to much over it.  The costume looks great I think and your sons looks adorable in it.

thanks shawn, those are excellent ideas. I may be able to pull some of those off. my son is standing next to a wall so that the spikes don't tip over... otherwise they fall right off

You know you might be able to mount the whole head piece to a ball cap which might help also. If you secured the first spike into the hat really well it should stabilize the whole tail... at least I think it would.

Try adding a fabric stabilizer to the inside of the spikes fabric.It.might stiffen it enough.
