Makeing blue foam white Posted by AvenueQrazy on Nov 09, 2009
For those who know Daryl (aka stiqpuppets) he has a great video on how to dye foam, but my question is how do you remove the color in foam? See, joanns is the clostest and best store for buying foam but thier foam is a bright turqoise and it shows through lighter colored fabrics. I really wish I knew how to make the foam a lighter color :[ can anyone help me? id do anything for white foam, its what the pros use.....

BUMMER. I don't think you can take the color out. I would think that using bleach would only harm the foam. Another source you can check with is upholstery shops. They often have the no color foam. A lot of times if you talk to the manager or owner, they will give you the scraps for free or at a very good discount because they cannot use small pieces that we would need as puppet builders. It is worth a shot. Joanne's foam can become quite expensive.

I recently purchased 1" foam at Walmart. It was in the sewing/craft section. Cheaper than Joann's and it is white.

Nikole is right you can not remove the blue from the foam. Sorry. You might have to get creative if you can't find the foam "raw" and buy something that has it in it like a pillow, camping mattress, ect. I am really surprised that JoAnn's does not have the white foam. Do you have a Hobby Lobby or other craft store?

Ive been google mapping "foam store (zip code)" "furniture store" fabric warehouse" bla bla bla but i have yet to find a place in tampa that looks alright. BUT as angelred4kids just pointed out, walmart has foam......I DIDNT KNOW THIS!!!! i live next to a super big one. I MUST check that out. NiKole, to save you the trouble of finding out, the bleach made the sample of foam turn into a green, aged, but freshly scented old sponge. ps ill give "upholsery" a shot

J's only has the "sea green" variety out here in NY at least by the one I go too. But they always have plenty in stock and those 50% off coupons from being a member of their mailing list makes it hard to use another source.. You can get the white foam in the pillow sized packages but the price is generally criminal and the pieces are small being only pillow-sized. I'm getting to the point of just biting the bullet and ordering from one of the online retailers 10yards at a time to make it worth my while and get what I need. It's just a pain to always buy things in bulk storage space is going fast in the workshop!!

I never had any problem with that. I mean, I used a green foam for my first, very light blue puppet and a foam color didn't show itself thru the fabric. I don't know, maybe you use other fabric than Antron that is just thinner.

That is funny! I don't mean to be laughing at your attempt but your wording is really funny.
