A New Puppet Posted by Jon on Nov 15, 2009
Several months have past since I built my last puppet and a long last I have completed a puppet.  He is an at yet unnamed prairie dog that will be part of a street show I am am developing.  I have two more prairie dogs to build and I am planning to post some videos of that build project and perhaps even go live on blogtv.

I built it with reticulated foam and covered it with terry cloth.

Let me know what think....

it's very nicely done, Jon. I like its palms.
that small dark green bit above a lower jaw is there on purpose or it's just a loose fabric?
how was it to work with reticulated foam? I read it's more elastic and lighter than a polyfoam but more porous and it may be kinda irritating for a puppeteer's skin?

Thank's Tsu.  I'm glad you like the hands.  I was going to give him fingers but the terry cloth frayed out to easily so I went with more of a mitten style of hand.

I think the green bit you're referring to is a loose strand of the terry cloth.  Terry cloth, the same thing bath towels are made from, has a lot of loose strands.  Most are not noticeable.

Working with reticulated foam is similar to working with polyfoam.  Similar weight and firmness when compared with the foam I have been working with.  It is more porous which allows it to breath easier and it is more durable (the reason why I chose it).  It is scratchy when it comes in contact with skin so I am making sure that I cover any surfaces where it will rub.

Very interesting to see a fabric other than fur or foam. I like the way he turned out. I looked at the pictures before I read the post (My college roommate always said that I looked at the pictures and laughed at the words) and my first thought was, "Wow, what a cool little prairie dog!" So, if that's any standard to go by, you succeeded in creating the creature you wanted. He's a cute little fella.

Puppet looks cute...I am amazed with the effect using
terry cloth. It looks neat..I like the hands. How have
you fixed the ears & hands? is it with glue gun or by
stitching?

The ears, hands and arms are hand stitched in place.  The nose as well.  Generally I try to steer away from gluing fabric together.  I guess I just feel that sewing is more durable.

Great job Jon!  You know I am surprised the topic of terry cloth or bath towels is not mentioned more often.  I used it for several puppets and really like it.  Cost is low and it is easy to die or find in the color you want.
