Puppet Performance Posted by jomama on Nov 18, 2009
We did our performance at the Detroit Puppetry Festival this past weekend. It went well, for the most part. We had very good feedback from some very seasoned performers. I know there are things we could have done better, but overall, I am happy with the performance.

The first clip is the video portion of our performance. This skit was done in segments with breaks for the songs we performed. The program was about 19 minutes long so I broke it down into shorter segments. The first song didn't get recorded but we have an older version so that is ok. The second and third songs are filmed closer, but the lighting is so strong on Rhoda that she is bleached out. But I think you'll get the idea of what we did.

I enjoyed those. It must take a lot of practice to get all the moves coordinated. I haven't seen a lot of this style of puppetry, so it was interesting to watch.

It does take coordination as well as some thinking about how a person actually moves. We didn't have much chance to work together as one of the puppeteers lives in Virginia (my daughter). We were all together mid October and had a day to work together. This was my husband's first time performing with a bunraku puppet. He controlled Rhoda's head and body in By Your Side, I controlled the feet and arms of Rhoda in both songs. My son did Pete's mouth and body and my daughter did Pete's feet and hands. She also did Rhoda's head and body in Carry Me.

My son and daughter have worked together for 13 years so they are very in tune with each other when it comes to coordinating the puppet movement.

Bunraku is a very challenging style of puppetry, because you have so much more to think about and coordinate than a regular half body, moving mouth puppet.

All I can say is Bravo !

Congratulations ! for all your hard work. It certainly shows. I commend you and everyone involved for everything from the building of the Puppets and Props to the Performance and video taping. I have always admired your work and this is certainly no exception. Can't wait to see what you come up with next.

Thanks Miguel.

Billy, thanks for the accolades. I built all the puppets and props used in the program. I'm starting to work on our Easter program. One Way Street performed a really nice program at the Detroit festival that I'm pretty sure we will be doing. I will make some changes, mostly with props and scenery, but the basic performance will be right from the script. Check out the info on the program.

As usual a job well done!! It is so much fun to see a performance come together! Will you be taking your team to I-Fest and performing there?  Then I will be able to see your performance in person!!! Wait I guess the proper way to say that would be - see it in puppet Anyway - you know what I mean!

Unfortunately this group will not be going to IFest. I will be there, and possibly my daughter, but not sure about my hubby and son. Work schedule and all that stuff. The people who did the props are part of the puppet ministry at my church and it was hard getting them to a festival one hour away.  The ones that came are excited but then they have to sell that excitement to their parents.

This particular performance was a collaboration between my family team, Higher Hands, and the church team. (No name)
