Mermaid Theater (Leo Leoni stories told with puppets) Posted by Nikole H. on Nov 19, 2009
I was fortunate enough to be able to see Mermaid Theater's newest puppet production, Leo Leoni's stories. They are a theater from Nova Scotia, Canada. They travel around the world and I still don't know how they manage to tour with all their large puppets and props. The three stories that they told were, "Swimmy," "Frederick," and "Inch by Inch." It was a mixture of rod puppets and shadow puppets all on the main stage so all were very large and grand.
The stories that the choose are so simple but told in such a grand and wonderful manner. All their stories are taken from children's books. The last performance that came through Singapore was "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," by Eric Carle. The best thing for me was that I was working on my own version of this book but on a much smaller level. It was nice to see a different perspective.
If you ever get the chance to see one of their shows, I highly recommend it even though their shows are geared for the very young. But on a professional level, it is amazing to see how they construct their puppets. I love hearing even the adults oooh and ahhh over the puppets when they make their entrance.
A nice touch that they say before their performances is that they are NON SHOOSHING shows. They welcome the children to talk during the performance and ask their parents questions. I love it. Having a 4 year old, I appreciate that even more. The excitement of the children was overwhelming and brought tears to my eyes. It was a truly beautiful show and great turn out as usual for Mermaid Theater. I can't wait for their next performance here in Singapore.
They do a question and answer session after every show and welcome those to take photographs and filming at that time. I was able to get that on video and posted it on my facebook link.
