Have no clue... Posted by titere on Nov 22, 2009
Hi everybody.
I made a logo for a company that use music to develop educational skills in young children. Now guess.. The client asked if I could draw a pattern for a puppet, out of the logo. And that they (client) would find somebody to make it out of my pattern. In other words, they want a puppet of the character/logo, to use it on their music workshop with the kids. Fantastic, I thought!  That will be nice, except for... How do I start?  I guess that it should be rounded, like a ball, in foam? And on the drawing, both eyes are on the same side.. What to do with that? And how can I draw a pattern, if I never done a foam puppet before?
The easiest, maybe... Anybody here will tell me how much you will charge to make the puppet out of the logo? Maybe my client then contact you, and voila!      (I include the image here)
Thanks a lot for any advice...musi

First while the eyes in the drawing are on the "one side" I would make them evenly spaced on the head since it is tree dimensional. The character will show if you make one large and the other small and place them close together. The note on the top could be a hat or even their hair.   Since it is round, I would use Project Puppets Rotondo or Roly pattern.  Why reinvent the wheel.

I would start with a sphere. You can find sphere patterns for free on the web. This would be the main puppet. Build the sphere with 1/2 or 3/4 inch foam and cut in the opening for the mouth and the hand access.  Insert the mouth and then cover with fabric.  To this I would attach the music notes, which have be covered with the same fabric, one on either side of the head.   Add the eyes and you have it.  Pretty simple.

Thanks Shawn for the advices. I liked a lot the idea of the note being kind of hair... And Jon, I would love to find that sphere pattern that is free... searched a little, could not find one. If you have a link...
I made a sketch of how the puppet could look. Is very good to "see" it before, as a preview. Comments and advices, please? )  And also about the body. I think without it, looks more like the original drawing... but I dont know if it is possible to make the hole for the hand just behind the puppets head (not under). In the other hand, with the body, maybe the children like it ore, it can wave the hands and say hello, for example. What do all of you here think?
I am not sure I can make this puppet, not because is too difficult, but because it would me my first foam puppet... I do not want the client to spend on all materials (including patterns, fleece, etc etc9 and then I make some error and need to start all over again!) )
Thanks for the help.musicpuppet

I looked around for the sphere pattern I used a couple of years ago and could not find it.  I have a copy here that I will scan and email to the address on your profile.

I have emailed you the pattern I have for a sphere. I hope you find all you need for this project.

Nice Logo.....in my opinion I would omit the body and only do the head.....keeping it simple and straight forward.

Titere, I am with Daryl on this one, I think the puppet should not have a body per say but only use the head as the puppet. Simpler is better.

Chris, mind sharing that pattern? I have been looking for a spere pattern and any help would be welcome.

The pattern is a very simple wedge shape. For a sphere, you just need eight pieces, glued together.

Thanks for the opinions/advices. And thanks for the pattern, Chris. I will start to play with it. Anyway, if someone here is interested on making this for my client, just email me. Have a nice Thanks Giving this week! (those of you in the USA)
