Painting puppets or changing skin color Posted by cj on Dec 01, 2009
I have a puppet I would like to make into a devil puppet. He has the regular peach colored puppet skin. I have read you can paint puppets, some say not to do that. Any ideas or thoughts on painting or changing a puppets skin?

As to what you should do with your puppet... It's your puppet do what you need to do.

I have heard that there is a spray on dye.  I've never used it so you ought to research how it will affect your puppets structure. There is more to consider than simply the color.

Since the puppet is primarily made of fleece and foam...................... Why could you not mix up some scarlet red rit dye. Using the dye paint small sections at a time. You could also remove the clothes eyes and tongue and dye the whole puppet ( not allowing the dye solution to soak deep in the foam and just to dye the surface area) I have not tried this so it is just a suggestion............. taking care that you dry it as soon as possible.
Let us know what you decide to do and take pictures if possible...................... so others can learn.

Quick question... Is it a fleece or fabric colored muppet like puppet?   As a read your post that was my first question.  Billy has assumed that is the type of puppet you are speaking of and I think his suggestions should work. The only thing I would caution about is the temperature of your dye bath if you dye the entire puppet.  It could be if it is too hot it could loosen some seams in the puppet depending on how it was constructed.

The material is fleece. I had thought about dipping it in dye. I just imagined the dye soaking through the foam and then the puppeteers with big red sweaty arms as the dye faded off on their arms. Painting the dye on does sound like it might work. This puppet actually belongs to our church youth group. I am pretty much able to do what ever I want to the puppets to improve them, but I am scared of  ruining it. I considered just ordering a devil puppet, but I was trying to save a little money. I think this is probably something I can do, just need to figure it all out before I jump in. Thanks for the input.
How do you post pictures to this sight?  I made another puppet (my first creation) that I am very proud of, I would like to share.

Another option would be to make red gloves and leg covers. You could also make a red mask and horns for the puppet to give it the illusion of being the devil. Then costume it out in a red fabric.................. Just another suggestion.

You already have an album set up for yourself.  Click that little camera under you name in a post and you'll be taken to your album. You can also click on Gallery at the top.  Once there upload some images.  Then when you post you'll see a button at the bottom called Gallery Image. If you click on it a window pops up and you can navigate to your User Album and find the image you want to insert into the post.

You can also use the small image icon at the top of the posting screen (only on full screen not the Quick Reply) to insert an image if you know it's URL. You put the URL between the img tags that it inserts.  That way you can insert images from like flicker or another site.  More info about that on the Help page.

Ohhh Ohhh.... I like Billy's last suggestion of using a mask.  If you want to get deep, you could say the puppet symbolizes the devil in all of use. Ok maybe that is way too much for a childrens church program.

Why not use costuming to make the puppet into the devil? Make him look like the evil character in cartoons, big handlebar mustache, white shirt, black cape etc, evil sounding voice. Much easier to do than changing the color of a puppet, and you can use him for other roles. If you have a dedicated devil puppet, that pretty much limits his use to only being the devil puppet.

Just sayin'....

You could use fabric airbrush paint and airbrush the new color on. Might take a little more time than dipping in dye but if that's not a viable option maybe this would be instead. You can get away doing it pretty cheap if you go to a Michaels type craft store and pick up a can of Propellant, the basic cheapo airbrush and some fabric paint. Little girls all across america paint their clothes each day, no reason to re-invent the wheel just buy their stuff and use it for your puppet madness!!
