Type of yarn for hair? Posted by puppetbubba on Dec 21, 2009
Hello, I haven't been on here for awhile. I had to put my puppet making aside for awhile but I am hoping to start up again after Christmas.

I want to make yarn wigs for my puppets. I did one and ended up looping the yarn for a ponytail because when I cut the yarn it frayed. Is there a yarn out there that someone can suggest that is good for puppet hair. Basically I want a yarn that won't frey or split at the ends when cut. Does anything like that exist? The puppets sold by companies seem to be fine. Is there a special method they use when cutting yarn. I just can't figure it out!

Any suggestions. I have searched the internet with no success. I don't need to know how to make the wig, just what type of yarn or what to do with the yarn so it won't fray or split. Hope that makes sense.

Well yarn is created by twisting fibers together.  They are always going to "untwist" to some extent when you cut them. I've used yarn in the past and it really has not frayed that much.  You might have to experiment with different yarns. A thicker yarn may work better for you.  You might also have to buy a better grade of yarn. In other words to pick up the scane that only cost 99 cents.

You could dip the ends in something like FrayCheck or a thinned down white glue that dries clear.

BTW:  Here is an image of a puppet I used yarn hair on.  Do you think that is too frayed?

If I recall once I had the hair on him, I gave him a haircut.  I think this can help to clean up the ends some.

That puppet is really great.  Do you have video of it in motion?

Thanks! No I don't have video of it. It was something I built for a production of "Carnival!" that was being produced at a local college. Aside from rehearsals and working with the actors and their puppets, I never even got back to see the production.

Doesn't look too frayed to me. Maybe I will try a thicker yarn. Micheal's has a yarn sale tomorrow!

This is good, Shawn, I really like your puppet, can you explain how you did this or just what materials you used to make his head, is it carved wood? Excellent work!

Mmm, I just visited you website again... I'm thinking he's made of wood.

Rosie,
This little guy is sculpted in Creative PaperClay over a hollow paper-mache' egg. It is the same technique I use for my marionettes but in this case it was a hand puppet so his head needed to be hollow.   I demonstrated this technique on Darly's BlogTV show but I don't think that it transferred to his YouTube account.  I may need to do another session on it at some time.

It is my goal to have all my video's that were taped both live and on camera up on my Youtube labelled and ready to go by the end of this month......if it kills me first.....lol.  I have already started labelling many that are there and doing some work each week.....I am depending on others to get the video's transferred and I do appreciate all the work they did, though, at the same time I also have to go by there schedules.  They are on board with my goal so hopefully they will be ready to go very soon.
