While I wait... Posted by dacostasr on Dec 22, 2009
I ordered the Foam Book after reading some nice reviews...while I wait I've been trying to design a puppet I like.  I'd like to do an "old" guy ...no offense intended (I'm an old guy).

Here are a couple of drawings I'm playing around with...Shawn commented on them for me...thanks Shawn...I thought I'd toss it out there for everyone to give me some advice if needed.

You've seen some of my other stuff, I haven't made a foam puppet before but It looks like it will be fun.

I think they're both very good. But, I like the second one better. I think the exagerated triangular shaped head works better. Although he doesnt seem as alert and intelligent as the first one. He looks more tired.

Dan had posted this over at the Foam Book Community forum and I answered him there.   Thought I would post the link to the thread here so folks could reference. http://greysealpuppets.com/foambookcommunity/index.php?topic=65.0 right now I am the only one who has replied to him over there but it might be worth keeping an eye to see if it gets any other responses.

I purchased some of Jay's videos (DrPuppet)...wow...for those of you that want to try the "foam" puppet thing out you've got to buy these.  Very informative and cheap and you can buy just the sections you want.  I bought the head video, covering the head video, stitching, patterns and eyebrows...very well done.  Now if I can just find some foam locally

Can't wait to get started with my old man...head shape changed again.

Well,  I bought some foam today...unfortunately they only have 1" at Joanne Fabrics.  So it is kind of thick but I think it will work.  Here are my progress pictures.

The white nose and chin are from model magic...the tan where the ones I made from regular clay to get a feel of what I wanted.

Today I cut the mouth...my hand feels really odd...here are some pics.  Is it just me, my hand kind of sticks out a bit...maybe because I used 1".

hmmmmm....

I couldn't glue in the mouth plate today....my wife thinks the glue really stinks...so I'll wait until tomorrow and do it in the basement.

I love the nose mouth and chin. They really give a lot of character to the puppet. I can't wait to see it together.

I am concerned about the one inch foam. I think that the thickness may end up interfering with the operation of the puppet. I know that I can get 1/2 inch foam at Joanns where I live. May you should check it out again.
