Anno's new clothes Posted by Abdolos on Jan 16, 2010
OK, I think I've figured out how to post images here now, so that's what I'm going to try and do.
My plans to produce a show for the 2010 Winnipeg Fringe festival fell through recently, so I've turned back to the puppets that I was working on three years ago before I began producing shows. This puppet was made for a tragedy I wrote in a University playwrighting course, but was never strung or clothed. He's hung around naked except for his goggles for some time now. I used some of the things I had learned during the two Fringe productions to make some pretty fine clothes for him to wear. They're more detailed than any larger audience could see, but whenever I add a superabundance of detail I just say that it's for the puppeteers. His boot-cuffs are made out of black vinyl, hot glue, and fishing line. Vinyl is fun to work with, but it holds hot glue on one side only, so you need to be a clever folder to use it.
Oh, I should also mention that Anno's hands and feet are made of Sculpey Bake and Bend, a kind of polymer clay that stays somewhat flexible after you bake it. The hands are quite small, and the extra flexibility makes them less fragile.
I've got a new controller design I've been working on, so I'll whip one up for Anno next and post when it's done. Fun!

Very cool puppet, love the boots! I'll have to take a look at the Sculpey Bake and Bend. One reason I never use it for hand is that it was brittle and would break. What is the head made out of? It almost looks like it was felted.

I really like the overall look of his cloths. Good Job!

Hi Abdolos,
Wow, great work on the clothing. Please, never excuse yourself for putting a ton of details. That is what makes it all even better and exciting. Your love for detail reminds me of one of my friends who add's a million details to his art too, but he draw's and is not into puppetry. I really love the overall look. Reminds me of some of Tim Burton's productions. I am sure that this puppet would sell for a nice price if put on the market.
Poor thing, 3 years without anything on, no wonder he looks this happy to be clothed LOL. Great job on that once again.

Thanks for the compliments, everybody. The head is made out of carved foam rubber that is painted. I used to cut the head open so that I could insert the structural piece, a T-bar, as you can see from the rear seams. Now I insert the pieces of the T separately and then tie them together in the neck cavity so I only have to make two channels into the head, not a large slice.
