New simple controller. Posted by Abdolos on Jan 17, 2010
I've already mentioned that I'm going back and fixing old puppet projects. Here's the latest, and it's one of the first marionettes I ever built. It's a head and shoulder marionette. When I finished it I had no idea how to build a working controller, so that part looked like this:
The twisted wire caught the strings sometimes, and the whole thing looks messy while accomplishing very little. This is the much simpler model I built today:
This controller accomplishes everything the other did, but without any complicated wooden joints.

Nice clean design on the new controller. Can you give a bit more info on how it works? I can't really see the puppet below so wondering if I have the string attachment right in my head. The back suspended bar seems to be attached to the shoulders. I think the second from the front is attached to the head and then the front one attached to the legs. Do I have that right? Do you walk the puppet simply by tilting the main control?
I use a similar design but my leg bar is detachable. I like to be able to walk the puppet independent of the main control motion.

Aw, Shawn, you know just what to say to make a guy feel wanted.
Here's the puppet:
As you can see, there are no legs, so no leg strings! The shoulder strings do go to the rear bar, and the two side head strings go to the middle bar. The forehead string goes front and center on the controller. The hand strings go through pass-through holes in the front bar and then back to the middle bar where they are anchored, which allows them to be pulled by the thumb and index finger of the hand holding the controller. Walking is all simulation, and the cloak is the perfect thing to hide the absence of legs.

Aw... now I see! Makes sense. I wondered about the fact that the front strings where a run through to the bar behind it and thought they could be manipulated by fingers that way.
Cool puppet.... glad I asked for clarification on the control! Got us a picture of the puppet.
