NH Puppet Builder Posted by April Dawne on Jan 19, 2010
Hello everyone! I've been to this site a few times and finally decided to join up so I can share ideas etc. My name is Nate, and I have been a puppet lover since childhood (mostly Muppets, obviously, and Knight Rider, but that's a different forum)... Anyhow, I have owned various puppets throughout my life but hadn't really dabbled in making any until December of 2009. I was on the web looking to buy a puppet and realized I couldn't really find any that jumped out at me. Then I happened across ProjectPuppet.com and there I learned that I could make my own. I didn't purchase a pattern right away, but I kept going back and checking it out until finally the curiosity got the better of me, and I got myself the Roly pattern. Well, nearly 4 puppets later (two of which are my own design) I think I am pretty much hooked on this whole puppet making thing. I'm thinking also that if I get good enough, I might even attempt to sell them. I have already had requests from friends and family members who are willing to pay me for puppets, so I am pretty enthusiastic.

One question I have... what is the actual process of picking the seams of antron fleece? I don't want to overpick, or do it wrong and ruin an otherwise good puppet! :D

when you sew a fleece, or any other fabric that has a nap, the nap tends to get caught in the seam.  If you take a needle and pick at the the fabric in the seam you can free the nap from the seam and this will blend both pieces of fabric together effectively hiding the seam.  It's not difficult just be gentle and you should be ok.

BTW - Welcome to Puppets and Stuff.  so glad you took the time to join.  I would love to see some pictures of your puppets.

Hi KnytMuppet,

First of all, welcome to PnS. Like you, I am fairly new to puppetry, and to fleece picking myself. But from what I have learned so far is that you go little by little, with your needle, working at your seam. Don't do it too much, cuz it will just look weird, but pick a little bit as you go just around your seam. My first puppet I went too far it it just looked bad and I had to then go back with sicors to cut away some of the picking that i had done in order to make it less visible. But I am pretty sure you will get the hang of it pretty fast.

Please, share pictures of your puppet if you can. We love pictures and videos. Once again, welcome to our growing and creative family.

Haha thanks for the quick replies, and the warm welcome! I just uploaded pics of three of my puppets. I was having difficulty sending them from my iPhone! Hope you like them! "Eddie" is the first I made with my own pattern for head and body! If anyone wants technical details about what I used or how I did it, let me know
