Why don't you abandon the idea of a pattern and copying these bears and make some from stuffed bears using Barbara Deweys method.

They are copyrighted, but I'm pretty sure that does not mean you cant replicate them. That just means if you make them you cant sell them as the bad idea bears. As long as it is for personal use it is fine.

Er, no. That's exactly what copyrighted means (not copying).
This is the assumption, but not the reality. You could still get sued for making replicas whether they are for personal use or not, because it's STILL copyright infringement.
It's also hard to tell from internet searches, but the majority of people out there who've been making Avenue Q replicas are doing so because they've been working on official amateur/school productions of the show and have permission to do so.
Not to mention the fact that copyright laws differ in different countries, so you can't really claim much of anything. The only reason you could get away with 'fair use' claims is because it's not economically viable to sue each and every fan, whereas it's economically viable to go after those making money from replicas. (Nor am I a lawyer, and we really shouldn't take each other's word on this, but ask a lawyer's advice)
Meanwhile Avenue Q have recently released two brand new official products: Bad Bear finger puppets

Trekkie hand puppets
http://www.avenueqtourgoods.com/view/details/id/175/for/Trekkie_Monster_Puppet
And everything you want to know about Avenue Q replicas:

And lastly, if that doesn't make you think, try reading what Rick Lyon has to say about the profitability of his own work:

Well, in that case, so many people here in P&S are in problems. Because a lot of them, made some replicas just for personal use!
Same thing with the canadian young guy who make videos to teach us how to make puppets, using avenue Q puppets.(He just do it as personal use)
To tell you the true, those videos have teaching me a lot(and I know a lot of you as well), and I've been enjoying those avenue puppet posted here.

I know I sound like I'm going overboard, but there really is no distinction. A lot of people I know have seen their work stolen, and used for 'personal use', but it still doesn't make it right, fair or legal. And it removes from the artist the ability to control what and how (and who) their work is used.
The Canadian young guy would be who? (Out of curiousity)

How do you feel "Mr.Slanket" feels about the snuggie. Food for thought.

Is this aimed at me, and if so, what are you talking about?
Re: How to make the bad idea bears Posted by Jackofspade on Jan 30, 2010
its aimed at nobody, its just food for thought.
What do you think the person who invented the slanket thinks about the snuggie.

Well, if I knew what you were talking about, maybe I'd have a response. I don't live in the same country as you, so I'm sure you're assuming that I have the same cultural references as you: but I don't. *shrugs*

I know for a fact that they sell Snuggies in Australia.
