Hiya! Posted by eldritch on Feb 09, 2010
Hey, guys.

I’m Rob, an amateur magician, juggler, sideshow aficionado and Star Wars costumer from eastern North Carolina.  I’m hoping to take my puppetry to a new level this year and move beyond the simple (and crudely made) glove puppets I’ve been monkeying around with for some time.  It’s more of a craft/hobby thing for me at this time, but who knows…maybe there’s a puppet show somewhere in the future.

In my short time lurking here, I’ve learned a lot.  Enough, in fact, to give me the confidence to try something with the Project Puppet patterns and maybe the Foam Book.  I do have a couple of questions, but I’ll post them in the appropriate sub-forum-board thingies.

Y’all look like a fun bunch!

Regards,
Rob

Welcome to Puppets and Stuff.........Make yourself at home and feel free to ask all the questions you want. Which Project Puppet pattern are you thinking about working with?

Thanks, fellas!  Gonna be good times here, I can see.

Billy:  I've ordered the Glorified Sock Puppet and Roly patterns from Project Puppet and the Foam Book is next.  The Glorified Sock Puppet, according to many on this forum, seems to be a great starter pattern for a mouth puppet and I've seen some really creative versions of it; looks like a good place to start.  My favourite Muppets were the various little monsters and the SS patterns have got me thinking that I can have my own monsters.     I also like the apparent size of the Simple Series puppets.  If there's a puppet show in my future, it'll have to be be portable to go along with my little street magic act.  As such, the SS patterns look like they'll fit on a modified Punch & Judy stage rigged for quick tear-down and easy transport.

I've already got some rough sketches for GSP and Roly puppets.  After a couple of attempts at these patterns, I'll start the fiendish process of mutation and adaptation.  Muahahahahaaaa!

My only previous mouth puppets were a couple of "Sock Puppies" from Puppet Mania.  That's the book that really got me thinking about going a little farther in puppetry.

LJ:  Once I get a digital camera next paycheck, I'll try to figure out how to get a pic up.  My glove puppets are, however, extremely crude...they're just muslin with unfinished styrofoam ball heads.  I made them to practice Punch & Judy behind a roughly-built basic booth frame (I didn't even bother putting roundings on).  My carving skills proved wanting, so I never moved on to building complete characters.  P&J just don't seem right to me unless they're made of wood.  At some point, I'll try to order a set from the UK or possibly find a local carver, but that's a long ways off.

My shows that are in Development Hell:

Fantod Manor (glove puppets):  Muppet Show + Addams Family + a touch of Edward Gorey.  Short comedy skits frame a longer ghost story.  Emcee character modelled on Roderick Usher (V. Price).  Hijinks ensue.

Castellet (glove puppets):  Fractured fairy tales + King Arthur.  A fantasy-like setting designed for possible deployment at the large chain bookstore I work at.  Nothing groundbreaking here.  It's probably the only thing I've ever written with children as the main audience.  I do hope, however, to make it just as entertaining for adults as for kids.  THAT'S the real trick.

"the Closet" (mouth puppets):  I've just started messing with this one.  It's a bunch of monster-style critter puppets who live in a dark old closet or under the bed or something.  I thought one of those "dutch" style doors (two panels, with the top one opening independently) would make for a nice stage.

Night of the Krampus (?):  Not especially marketable, but I've always liked the Krampus character.  A Christmas-themed cautionary show with really annoying tots and an overworked Krampus.

If you made it this far down, congratulations!  I do have a tendancy to ramble.

Regards,
Rob
