Hello Posted by ashley8bit on Feb 09, 2010
I have been browsing this site for a while and decided that enough was enough and I should sign up.

So a little about me:
My interest in puppets has existed as far back as I can remember, growing up watching Rainbow and Sesame Street probably influenced me quite a bit. Many years later when I was 18 or so my interest was brought back to puppets and puppetry after attending a One Way UK puppetry workshop. When I got home from the event I was hooked, I just wanted to get my hands on a puppet, nothing online tempted me in terms of puppetry so after a lot of searching I found http://www.puppet-planet.com/ and had a puppet made for me. Now education is out the way and I have a bit more free time I have started to think I should try my hand at puppet making, so this is where I am today.

I have been given the Glorified Sock Puppet pattern and plan to put my first puppet together this weekend or next.

I'm sure I will post more questions on here in the future but one thing that has been causing me problems so far was tracking down 45mm hemispherical eyes with posts (this is the kind the custom puppet has) within the UK. I have managed to order 35mm eyes from http://thecraftyden.com/puppetmakingsupplies.aspx which should hopefully come in a day or 2 but 45mm would be even better.

So all that is left to say is a big hello from me

Welcome to P&S. I can't wait to see how your puppet turns out so be sure to post pictures. We have a few members from the uk that might be able to help you track down the eyes you want.

Speaking of members, Michelle from puppet planet is a member here. She hasnt been able to post regularly inrecent months but most of us admire her work. We would love to see the puppet she made for you.

I will definitely post pictures when It is complete, I might take a few during the build too so I can see what I did wrong or right  . The puppet in my avatar is the puppet made by Puppet Planet.

Oh btw a ping pong ball is 40mm and might make a good substitue for the 45mm dime eyes if you can't locate them and the 35mm is too small.

Hey, welcome to the site Ashley! If you are anything like me, you will be completely hooked by the time you finish your first one! Haha my place is starting to really look like a puppet workshop with fleece and eyes and felt all over the place, but I couldn't be happier. Check at www.puppet-mart.com for the dome eyes with posts, they carry both 45 and 35 mm sizes, I buy from there a lot myself, as well as the coveted antron fleece. They also have some nice shades of skin tone dyes (since antron comes white and needs to be dyed) that are premixed to treat a full yard of fabric. Can't wait to see your first project!

Oh by the way, www.bjcraftsupplies.com and www.foamdistributing.com are also great places to find various essential puppet-making supplies

Thank you for the websites. My concern being in the UK is the cost of shipping on some items.

Welcome to Puppets And Stuff!

Shipping overseas can be very expensive.  Not to take away from Matt's Puppet Mart, but it would be nice if there was a seller in Europe that could supply puppet makers on that continent.   We seem to have picked up several UK members of late.  I wonder if you could all get together and put in a larger order for things and share the cost of shipping.

If you do find a local source for the 45m eyes don't forget to share it with us.
