How do you copyright a brand new idea Posted by Bludolphdolph on Feb 10, 2010
I have discovered something today that may change the puppet making industry especially with youth groups etc. I dont want to say too much. But I have done alot of searching and nothing like what I came up with exists. So I have a totally new way to make puppets but I need to get the concept protected so I can sell the items and let others in on it. What do I do? How do you patent a new process? . I will tell you that this has blown my mind it was an accidental discovery. I am sort of a made scientist any way. I would appreciate any advise you may have. I know that you all have been in it for a while and from what I have seen you really know your stuff.

You may need to obtain a patent/trademark/or copyright, it just depends.  I would recommend contacting a reputable patent/trademark attorney in your area to have it done right.  You can obtain attorney referrals by contacting your local State Bar Association.

Here's a link from the US Patent and Trademark Office which discusses patents, trademarks and copyrights.

We have a great deal of experience in the trade mark and copyright process.

To get a patent takes time and work.  You must write out in absolute detail your process and the patent office then reserches the process to see if it has already been secured.

A trade mark takes about 9 mo.  Ours for JumpNPuddles.com took over 1 year using our trade mark attorney.  JumpNPuddles caused a problem and it took more time.  It was close to Jumping in Puddles and special consideration needed to be made.  It is a process but worth it if the process or name becomes commercially viable.

BTW: plan on about 3000 to 4000 to get a TM and a patent can be much more.
