Safety puppets Posted by SusieQ on Feb 13, 2010
Hello,
Is there a link or scripts available that teach basic safety to preschools and KDG - 2nd grade age children? I am looking for basic safety scrips such as stranger danger, bike safety, if you get lost. We are a group of women who volunteer with a Citizens group for our local Police dept and we do puppet shows for children about safety. We are trying to make our shows more interesting.
Thanks!
Susan

Billy has given you some good links there. I did an internet search and did come up with some sites that may be useful although they are not scripts exclusively you may find resources on them. You may have some of these already but they could be useful to other folks who stumble across this thread.
http://www.childrenssafetynetwork.org/ : This one looks pretty in depth.
http://www.safetykids.org/ : This one has some songs about safety. I would ask them before you actually used them though. Actually some of them seem to be old standard melodies with new lyrics.
http://www.cdc.gov/family/kidautumngames/ : This page has some games on it that may inspire some ideas.

hello,
I just wanted to let you know that "stranger danger" while an important lesson is statistically speaking not very pressing. the wide majority of people who hurt. children (physically /sexually) are people who are in the child's life. If this is something you would like to explore i would suggest a skit that teaches children it's not okay for anyone to hurt/ touch you even if you know them.

Agreed. But it is hard to get kids to speak out against their parents or people ( aunts and uncles, cousins, even older siblings) who use fear to keep the kids from saying anything ("be still or I'll hurt your Mommy!", "This is going to be our little secret, don't tell anyone, they will not believe you anyhow!")....
Re: Safety puppets Posted by mindfulloffire on Mar 16, 2011
totally true, but I think it could have rewards in prevention. how a potential perpetrator may seriously reconsider if a child says "no-one is allowed to touch me there"

oh, also, pool safety is a good one. lots of kids die in pools. if you can prevent it with pool safety puppet skits then you're making a dent.
