Suggestions needed for jellyfish puppet Posted by lovable puppet pals on Feb 20, 2010
Hello all,
Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I'm going to be making some jellyfish puppets that are fairly small. I need suggestions for the "tentacles". I was thinking of ostrich feather trim, feather boas, etc. I didn't think the ostrich feather fringe was long enough though. It has to be something that will "float" in the air. These will be blacklight puppets.
Of course, I'm looking for the cheapest solution! LOL
Thanks for your help!

Marabou which is the thin cheap version of a feather boa would work well I think. You could also use something like silk which would be nice a "floaty". If you cut your strands and did not hem the edges the fabric would fray a bit which could look good. I don't think it would fray too much over time but you might have to take care in handling them and storage.

Thanks, Shawn, I'm considering the marabou I think. Do you think that as long as I order the hot pink or fuschia, it will be blacklight reactive? I've used some before and it was, but I wasn't sure if they are all the same.

OK, so I finished five of these jellyfish today.
I used fabric like Shawn suggested, and it looks fine, but I think I will order and try marabous instead. When they come in, I will replace and take pics to show you.
They turned out really fun!
Thanks for your help!

Sara,
Check out this video. Their jelly fish seem to be made from a strip of fabric that has a seam up one side. Then they gathered that seam. Maybe? Just a thought. I saw giant ones like this at a restaurant at Disney World's boardwalk.
I think the feather boas might be to thick. But if you decided to go that way I carry shocking pink, light pink that looks salmon color, white or yellow. They are all blacklight colors. http://www.outoftheboxpuppets.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=107

You might want to search the net for pictures of the FINDING NEMO ride at Disneyworld. After seeing the jellyfish there on our last vacation, I was tempted to make some jellyfish puppets, too. They used fabric that was like chiffon....not sure if I am spelling that right. There is a more technical name that I think is called "georgette?" If you go to a fabric store, I'm sure they can point you in the right direction. You could sew a running stitch on one length of the fabric and then pull the string on one end and it will gather. This type of fabric will definitely "float" as it is so light and transparent.
Good luck and I can't wait to see the finished product.
