Looking for inspiration Posted by puppetgospel on Mar 10, 2010
Hi all,
Over the next year to two, I am working on developing a production with puppets. Right now I am focusing on the puppet design itself and want to find ideas of puppets that are "out of the box" design. I am looking for examples of puppets that you forget they are puppets (perhaps more realistic or unusual). I am not sure if I want to take the route of hand puppets or body puppets. I am also looking for puppets using unusual materials that are kinda out of the norm but add to the effect.

Julie from "Out of the Box Puppets" is on this forum!

IMHO - unusual puppets do not make people forget they are puppets. Great puppeteers and a great show do that.

Yes, good puppeteers do, I fully agree. The production will have a serious drama tone so I need to stay away from the cartoonish looking traditional puppets. I do like stuff from Hensen that was in the dark crystal and the labyrinth.

I also meant "out of the box" as in not a normal style or method. But i will check out her work.

You should research object theatre (some call it found puppetry/found puppets). Lots of great ideas to be had from inventing puppets out of stuff you happen to find, as compared to designing with the 'usual' materials.
