Hand stitching the mouth Posted by lovable puppet pals on Mar 10, 2010
OK guys, before I got lots of people saying they think the mouth needs to be sewn...I agree. However, when I make a custom puppet, of course I can't sew the mouth in before putting the fleece on the puppet. So...what stitch do you use when you sew the fleece to the inside of the mouth?

Use a ladder stitch. You want the fleece to turn under and create a hem that is covering the stitch.
I can actually normally get it to do this and hide with just what I call a whip stitch. I fold the fleece over as I move along and then grab just the underside of the "hem".

OK, Shawn, thank you! That really helps. I used a form of ladder stitch on one, and it just didn't turn out too good. Now I know it's because I didn't turn it under as I went. I think I will pull it out and redo. Oh bother!!! lol

In theory the ladder stitch is supposed to turn the fabric for you but in this case, I've found it doesn't always work. That is why I just go ahead and turn the fleece itself under.
