I use a Brother because it was affordable but prefer the heavier metal machines such as Singer, Jannome, etc. Here is a consumer report on sewing machines

Both the brands that Billy mentioned (Singer, Janome) are good. Another really good brand is Bernina http://www.berninausa.com/ in fact if you ask a wardrobe supervisor that well be most likely their suggestion. Right now I actually have a really cheap Brother that works just fine. The thing about buying cheap is that when it breaks down you just go out and buy a new one because more then likely the cost of the part and repair is more. With better machines you do repair them.
So ask yourself how much sewing are you going to be doing. If you are going to be sewing every day and working with heavier fabrics like fleece then I would get a better brand. If not just get a cheap one.

I love my Janome it has been with me over 10 years with no service and really does not need it....I use it more than my car so it has had a rough run with me.....get a used one you really don't need a new sewing machine I have the model memory craft 3000 it is a slight computerized sewing machine, what I love about this model is the automatic needle down when you stop sewing....trust me with all the turns and around abouts you need to do with hands ect....having the needle stop automatically in the down position so you can move the fabric without losing the spot you are at....a lifesaver.
Mine was a used one and I have had no problems with it....you also get a good machine at a budget price....I would recommend to buy it through a store that sells sewing machines they normally have hand me ins for people who are upgrading there machines...I would not recommend Craigs List or listings in general for used sewing machines.
Hope this helps....

Buy one with metal gears. I have 3 I purchased at a school auction over 10 years ago and I just had to have one of them worked on.
I stay away from computerized for puppet making because I don't need all the bells and whistles (making clothing is another matter).
Fleece is not really considered a heavy fabric, (like leather or canvas). The correct needles are very important.
Hope this helps.

I love my Janome, that I bought after Daryl suggested getting one. I recently made a St. Patty's day out fit for a puppet using my machine, and it was able to sew through several layers of fabric without missing a beat. My old machine would have struggled, and left me with a tangled mess.
