Third time may have been the charm... Posted by CarolF on Mar 25, 2010
I've finally completed my third mouth & rod puppet: the first one that really seems to work. The very first one developed problems when a real puppeteer tested it out, and the second one was an unsuccessful attempt to use different materials and it collapsed (inappropriate foam). There are still some things Chief Rotundo taught me, but he's OK as he is. I've posted a "Making Of" video on YouTube:
Now it's on to the NEXT one

Thanks, Johan! I especially love the hair. I found a set of wristlets with the long feathers at a JoAnn's SuperStore in another city. Had to go back and buy more once I saw how much movement they give Rotundo. I'm hoping to get some video soon. I can't do him justice as a puppeteer, but the owner lives a couple of hours away.

I'm glad you liked the video. Slowed down the construction (and there are still shots I thought I took but didn't find on the disk), but it helped me remember exactly how I did it. I had some disasters with the first two when trying to hot glue the eyes on, so I really like the option of sewing them on this way. I've also discovered that my styrofoam hot knife will cut ping-pong balls, so I can get them on more securely when I add eyelids.

Love the puppet! The detail is fab! - But be careful with the pupil placement. To me, his eye focus seems off a little.
