Resurgence in Puppetry and Puppetry for adults Posted by Gowroo on Apr 08, 2010
Hello!

I am currently writing my dissertation on puppetry and the recent rise in popularity particularly with adult audiences. I have contacted certain members of the Puppetry community for interviews but as part of my research I am posting these questions with the hope of gaining a selection of opinions from puppetry practitioners.

If any of you get a spare moment to answer any of the following questions I will be awfully grateful.

Cheers!

Until the recent Suspense Festival, it had been over 25 years since the last London Puppetry Festival, in your opinion why has it been so long and why is now a good time?

Puppetry appears to be experiencing a resurgence in the UK at the moment but why do you think this is?

Europe seems to embrace puppetry for adults much more readily than in the UK. In your opinion why do you think this is?

With more and more “mainstream" theatre companies incorporating puppetry in their performances as a side piece (War Horse and the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Venus and Adonis)  do you think that there is a potential for the creativity of the puppetry within the piece to be jeopardised?

In your opinion why do you think more “mainstream” theatre companies are using puppetry as a medium within their performances?

Is there a concern that with more theatre companies using puppetry as a tool, actors will replace the puppeteer?

Would you agree with the statement that with more “mainstream” theatre using puppetry, this will help dispel the myth that puppetry is solely for children?

Many thanks again!

Welcome Gowroo!

I'm sure there are some UK members here, but not many. Have you tried asking your questions at more UK-oriented places, like UNIMA UK British UNIMA and Puppeteers UK (http://www.puppeteersuk.com/ )?

I think perhaps these questions require a little more specific knowledge than what us non-Brits can offer.

I agree with Na, that since you have specific questions that pertain to the UK that you might get more response at the UNIMA site. Hopefully our UK members well see this though and reply here.
