Where do you host your website? Posted by Gabriel G on May 18, 2010
Hey everyone,
I'm looking into good webhosts to host a new website for my team. Thankfully, Free Domain Registration now seems to be common place and it's just a matter of choosing which one will be reliable, helpful, and good on the budget.

Before I make any decisions, I thought it'd be great to hear from all of you as to where you host your websites and how much you pay and what your experiences have been so far. I look forward to hearing from you all!

I use Microsoft Office Live and have been very happy so far.

I use Host Gator, and have been very happy with them, after leaving several previous hosting services. I like using cPanel for my administrative access, so that is a priority for me.

I use a really good Aussie one (actually my host is in Aus, but I'm on US servers).

Do be careful: there are a lot of too-good-to-be-true cheap hosts out there that provide bad service. The lower the price, the worse the service it seems.

I'm actually in the middle of writing a how-to on making a good puppet website. It will cover stuff about web hosts and what to look for when comparing them.

I use WestHost.com.  I've been with them since the start and in fact they where suggested to me by Rose over at the Puppet Home Page.  Don't know if she still uses them or not.  They may not be the cheapest out there but they are reliable.  They use cPanel for administration now.  I used to register my domains through them also but I've changed over to using whois.com since they are a bit cheaper and offer free privacy protection on your whois info.  If your whois info is not protected you'll get tons a spam and junk mail. It is "illegal" to use the information on a whois for spam or junk mail but since the internet is not regulated very well you still get a lot of spammers harvesting the information.

P.S.  Right now WestHost is running a special where you get one year free if you sign up for two years or 6 months if you sign up for one year.  That free hosting is added on to the end of your plan so if you order the two years you end up with three years of hosting for the price of two years.  It is a big chunk of money to lay out but I like paying in lump sums anyway so I don't have to remember  to pay the bill each month.

We have used Wordpress and Blogspot.  Blogspot is very easy to use and understand, however the features are very limited.  Wordpress is great for adding plugins and other features!

@Lisa Thanks for the info!

@Chris Ah I was looking into them actually, thanks for the feedback :D

@Na Yes I've used webshosts before but it's been a long while, everything is always changing!
And that sounds fantastic, please let us know when you're done with it! I'm sure it'll be very helpful.

@Shawn Thanks for the recommendation, and also about the privacy protection. Most of the sites I looked into offered it but I didn't realize how important it was. I'll look into it :D

@Charlestons Thanks for the info!

It's half finished, but if you want a copy of the draft, let me know. The basics on web hosts is completed, it's just the other half on actual design that's not done yet.

bluehost is pretty good -- about $60 a year for unlimited space.
