Teeth - Question Regarding Materials and How To Posted by Pdyx on Jun 15, 2010
I'm sure someone's asked this around here before, so forgive me; I'm new.  Also, sorry if this is the wrong forum for this.  I wasn't sure where questions about puppet building should go.

I've only made a few puppets so far and I haven't done teeth on any of them.  They're hand puppet type puppets (see my introductions thread for pictures) using a basic pattern.

One of the puppets I'm currently working on begs to have some fangs/teeth.  I've seen it done on this type of puppet before, but I'm not sure what the best material is and if anyone has advice for shaping the teeth and attaching them (I'm assuming a hot glue gun will be the way to go there).

Thanks for your time!  I'm glad I found this website!

You can sculpt your teeth from foam and coat them with a product called sculpt or coat http://www.sculpturalarts.com/foamcoating.htm then hot glue them to your puppet.......or you can use a air dry clay like Model Magic from Crayola http://www.crayola.com/products/splash/model_magic/index.cfm?n_id=58

these can be bought from a art supply store

If you go the Model Magic route, you may want to use the Fusion variety if you can find it. The regular kind tends to crack and split as it dries if the model is larger than an inch or so. You'll also probably want to coat it with some kind of sealant, since both types of Model Magic can break and also can't get wet.

Here's a tutorial for making a Chain Chomp that has felt teeth that are sewn on (there's some language in the comments, just so you know): http://bloodscale.deviantart.com/art/Plushie-tutorial-Chain-chomp-144705275

I have a lot of 1/2 inch foam lying around right now, so sculpting teeth from that might be the way to go.  I'll look into the Sculpt or Coat product.  Do you paint after applying that or will that leave it looking white anyway?

Anything I should know about using Sculpt or Coat if I go that route?

I have used 3/4" EVA foam.  Unfortunately I don't know where to purchase it in sheets.  I scavenged my from a life size elephant parade puppet that was being thrown away.  Said day.  It was beautiful..  Makes good teeth.  I have a hippo that I used the eva foam on.  I'll try to get a photo.

Here's a photo of the eva. http://www.crafoam.com/Pro_show.asp?proid=252  Same as craft foam from a hobby shop only thicker.

What about craft foam? I've seen other puppet makers use that too.

PS. Welcome!

I think Hobby Lobby has the EVA foam. Not in sheets, but in door hangers, crowns, etc. It is on the aisle with the thinner fun foam. Since you don't need a lot, you could probably purchase a pack of door hangers or whatever and use them. They should have a 40% off coupon on their website next week (usually have one every other week).
