Which finger controls the brows? Posted by Boeliewoelie on Jun 15, 2010
Hey everyone!!

Yesterday I saw this great howto-vid by Paul Lewis and so I ended up here at Puppetsandstuff. I want to make a supergreat puppet for my boyfriends birthday. It's gonna be a puppet that looks somewhat like a muppet or like puppet Tom (--> Youtube). I have some great ideas about how to build it, and I also want to make the eyebrows move (not the eyes). I know how I can make a brow-moving system (at least, I think I do...), but there is one thing I just don't understand: how can you move the brows if all your fingers are in the mouth of the puppet?? I mean: your four fingers are supposed to be in the upper lip and your thumb is supposed to be in the lower lip. So which finger controls the brows? Or should you use your other hand to do that? Thanks for helping!!

Greetings, Bonnie

Welcome to Puppets and Stuff..................... We just Love new projects and thrive on seeing pictures of new work. May I recommend these down loadable video tutorials from our own Dr.Puppet aka Jay Tyson. They are very reasonably priced at  only $5.00 us dollars plus tax. The eyebrow tutorial takes you step by step thru the process. I have all his videos and recommend them as well.

I haven't done brows, but I have done blinking eyes. With mine, all you needed to do was use one finger from the hand holding the mouth, lift that finger up to where the eye mech was, and then pull/rotate the mech with the finger. With other mechanisms I've seen, you can usually use a finger just to push a lever to make the eyes rotate, so I don't think it would be much different with brows. (You could also use an elastic with a pull ring on it instead of a lever, and wear the pull ring on your finger, I've seen this done before too)

PS. Welcome!

Bonnie,

Welcome to Puppets and Stuff!  Just to be clear this is not Paul Lewis's Puppets and Stuff.  He used to own a domain called puppets"n"stuff.  He dropped the "a" and "d".  I actually just checked and it looks like the domain is no longer there and is now being used for advertising.   I do hope that his video's on YouTube do not get lost.

Na is correct about simply using your index finger to trigger the eyebrows.   If you think that well be to hard for you to do then you can run a line down the inside of the puppet and pull it with the other hand.  That is how I actually did it on one of my puppets that had blinking eyes because it was easier. He also had other moving parts so having the controls below where you could see which one to activate was easier.
