Build you own hot wire foam cutter Posted by Billy D. Fuller on Jun 27, 2010
I found this guy on the internet that is great at explaining how to build different home models of hot wire foam cutters. It seems simple enough I may even try it. If I don't post here for six weeks come looking for me I'll be in my shop with frizzed hair and cold feet.

I can build the main part of the body of the small and large PVC wire cutter that he gives you plans for. What I don't understand is all the electrical part.
question: Could I use 20 gauge steel wire and a direct plug in class 2 transformer as my power source. I'm just curious since most hand held hot wire cutters that you buy must have a type transformer device built in to the handle............. Curious minds want to know
Or should I buy the transformer he recommends

I don't know a thing about all this stuff. But I do know you can buy a transformer at Radio Shack for about $30.

I don't think steel wire would work. I have always heard that Nichorme wire is what is used in hot wire cutters. I think it is what has the correct properties that make it heat up when you pass current through it. I also know that the current that gets passed through the wire is pretty touchy. Too much current and the wire simply fries.

I'm a scared of electricity......................... I've heard of folks using guitar strings................... just figured that might work. Better stick to his suggestions.

Ah, that made me laugh, Billy
In the early stages of puppet building I tried using a small exacto type knife, I didn't like it at all. So now I use, believe it or not, a simple pair of sharp scissors. My puppets are always covered in fleece and fabric so detail is not an issue.
This is a really interesting topic though. Will be amazing if someone actually makes one.
