Anyone Worked with Upholstery Foam? Posted by Sunbeatle Puppets on Jun 28, 2010
I found a site that sells upholstery foam, and i don't know if that works or now. has anyone worked with it before?

I use "upholstery" foam all the time.  It really is no different then regular poly foam that you get at a store like JoAnn's or Hobby Lobby. I buy all my foam direct from a company that supplies foam to companies that make upholstery.

Shawn is right upholstery foam or poly foam is measured by density and compression deflection load . They measure foam by the PSI (pressure per square inch) and density. I buy my foam from the factory. regular 1030 series of urethane foam comes in 1.2 density at 34 lb compression PSI.  comes in rolls of 36to 54 feet long and 36 inches wide.

This is where I buy foam on the east coast.

Here is a quick demonstration or example of how foam is made...................... this looks like it might be Styrofoam but the same principles applies for polyfoam

Just one more question, how well does this kind of foam take die? or could you just paint it with like, an air brush?

You can use rit dye or paints used for air guns................... just don't use spray enamel paints it eats away at the foam.

do you guys think that 1/2" thick is good? or would 1" be better?
Re: Anyone Worked with Upholstery Foam? Posted by Shawn on Jun 28, 2010
1/2" should be fine.  I feel that 1" is overkill.
