gdub106 show did your making it so that the snout looks full? Foam maybe?
Re: Ideas for Fraggle-style puppet? Posted by April Dawne on Jul 26, 2010
@gdub106, I do have a finished Wimble in my gallery, he has a red furry body and light peach colored antron skin, with red boa hair and ears. He also has the ping-pong balls with doll eyes inserted through holes. Also, to get them to stay close together like the Fraggles eyes, I also drill a hole in the side of one ping-pong ball and then carefully glue the hole to the un-drilled side of the other. It holds more sturdily together. I usually drill the holes for the doll eyes afterward, and then add the eyelid so as to be sure it isn't positioned to give the eyes a sleepy or angry look that I might not want.

@puppetfreak To fill the snout of mine I just use polyfill, the same stuff I use to stuff arms and legs. I buy cheap pillows, and cut them open for the fill inside. Oh, I also make a polyfoam "skull" as shown on the roly pattern from Project Puppet, I just trim it down afterward to fit the smaller "skull" area of the Wimble to help the head keep it's shape. You could probably do that with the unmodified sock puppet pattern to, so that the eyes don't move all over as you manipulate the puppet.

I may use the poly stuff to make the structure if the head (I want it to be pretty flexible, so some mouth plate ideas are appreciated.) and fill the arms for some loosey goosey movement.

More on the eyes, I do have some googly eyes I scrapped from a whatnot styled puppet I scored for about a dollar (I'm changing him to the mad scientist type), but I'll probably use the vinyl in case I don't like where the pupils are positioned.

I agree that scooter does have a kind of fragglie look to him. I think using his head would work well

Like I said, I'm going more toward Red's design, but I see your point.

Well the purple Wimble is up, I have pics of him in several stages of development; like I said, he was inspired by the Fraggles, I just changed things a little bit to make it unique.

I like the look very much =] I sold this one for $75. to a friend who loves Fraggles. As a coincidence, my nickname was Fraggle in middle school for some reason.

hmm, i see, Red's design.. sorry i can't think of anyway to help with that
Re: Ideas for Fraggle-style puppet? Posted by fragglefan76 on Aug 03, 2010
I see the resemblance. It does have some fraggle vibes, specifically the body, and I see the differences. Kinda like a fraggle version of Gonzo, at least in the nose area.

I recently got the GSP pattern, now all I have to do is get some supplies (Fleece, ping pong balls, feathers or something for hair, ect.) and I'll probably have to make him clothes unless I can find something that screams "80's rocker" in a baby size.

Since the GSP pattern has a more triangular snout, maybe rounding it out would help? A friend of mine recently used it and got a more rounded snout. Some people around here said it could be done with just a little tweaking.

I might need suggestions on what to do for the mouth plates. I want it to be flexible, but still maintain some shape (I heard rubber or stiffened felt works, but I'll take any suggestion).

Re: Ideas for Fraggle-style puppet? Posted by April Dawne on Aug 03, 2010
The snouts shape can be changed by changing the shape of the inner mouth felt palate (the part you sew or glue the tongue to) just don't change it's overall size, or it won't sew in right. For the inner mouthplate, I glue two pieces of stiffened felt to 1/2 inch polyfoam, then I glue some scrap fleece to the other side of the foam for comfort and durability, then glue the inside of the felt puppet mouth to the stiffened felt side of the mouthplate (after the felt mouth palate has been sewn into the head of course) the instructions for the glorified sock puppet show how this is done. It gives you a flexible mouth that you can contort like Kermit's while going back to it's original shape.

For the hair on them I use these:

I just carefully take the feather piece off the clip and it makes a perfect hair piece for a puppet. You could combine a few to get it fuller, or just cut a piece off an ostrich feather boa. I just find these clips more convenient, I can order multiple colors and just grab one and apply it with little fuss.
