Gaffers tape is high quality. It'll stick to anything, and works especially well even under heat stress. Duct tape (or cloth tape) is crap in comparison.

Case in point: gaffers tape is used by backstage technicians. Duct tape is not. (I met some film makers a while ago who didn't like gaffers tape because it worked too well)

Of course, it depends on what you need it for. Gaffers tape is incredibly sturdy and strong, but it does leave marks on things if you remove it after a long period of time. Because of the stickiness, I'd also avoid using it to cover handles or rods, unless you want gunk all over your hands during a show. (Edit: I see One Way Street says it doesn't leave stickiness, so maybe it's a difference in brands - we can't get the same one here in Aus.)

Gaffers tape may be matt, but it still will get some shine off it and it won't be invisible under blacklight/light curtain. (See above edit)

The other issue is cost. I don't know what the difference is in America, but a single roll of gaffers will cost $50 AUD, compared to duct tape which you can usually get for $5-10 AUD per roll.

Personally, I'd never use gaffers on a puppet build. But that's probably just the techie in me speaking.

I actually use it for hinges on mouth plates and it works quite well, provided that it's properly reinforced. Some brands do indeed seem to be better than others. The cheapest gaffer's tape I've seen doesn't work well at all.

In these parts, them's fighting words

Q: What will you never hear said in West Virginia?
A. You can't fix that with duct tape.

Maybe I need to be American to understand the joke

Well, as I say, it's probably the techie in me. I can't tell the number of times I swore because electrical tape or cloth tape was used instead of gaffer. I have two rolls in my personal toolbox and hope I never run out (darn expensive otherwise!).

Na................... I think that was a joke. Some Americans can think of the most inventive way to use duct tape without spending much money. Here is some examples.

I did see on the diy channel a mannequin made from duct tape.

How about a duct tape wallet

I know, I know!

There's a techie saying: gaffer tape is like the force. It has a light side, a dark side, and it holds the whole world together.

But it's also why I prefer gaffer to duct. It does a better job at holding everything together.

gaffer sounds a lot better, but waaaaay too expensive!

I am confused a little by this topic......

I have recently ran out of gaffer tape and went out searching for more since the place I got it at went under the store that I ended up at was a specialized place for movie/theatre productions equipment.  They label all there tapes cloth instead of gaffer.....someone said that cloth is a cheap end tape and not gaffer.....I paid for 1 roll at 2" 60 yards $17.00 CAN.  is this high end tape or low end tape, is this gaffer or a knock off?

I can return it but I do want the better stuff and not be using something that will fall apart in no time.
