Antron Fleece Dyed Posted by April Dawne on Jul 24, 2010
I didn't know where to put this, so move it if it doesn't belong here!

I just dyed a bunch of Antron Fleece, mostly using Matt's dye packs (that's Matt of Puppet Mart), and wanted to show you my work, and also sing the praises of Matt and his ready-made dye packs =]

Here is some Antron Fleece being dyed with Matt's Desert premixed dye on the left, and another batch with Rit's Purple dye

Here are the four pieces of Antron drying after being dyed for approximately 20 minutes each. I figure I can get two puppets from each piece.
I used approx the same amount of water for each bath, mixing hot tap water with about half a gallon of water heated in the microwave for 2 1/2 minutes. It was pretty hot! I then wet the Antron in the same water before adding the dye. I then mixed it, placed the wet Antron in the bath and agitated with a long plastic spoon.

Here they are fully dried and ready to use =] Matt's dye packs make dying Antron a snap! I am also pleased to say that the coloring is very even, and very pleasing! I can't wait to get some puppets made with this fleece! The photo doesn't seem to represent the colors exactly, but it gives you the general idea.

Thanks to Matt at Puppet Mart!

I noticed you did this in the sink. Did you have any staining of the sinks after you finished? Stainless steel is normally pretty resistant to dye but just wondered. Perhaps this is a shop sink so it did not matter.   I know that in porcelain sinks you can get staining from dyes. Just thought I would mention this in case someone else saw the pictures and thought hey I can do that in my new $5000 sink... opps.

How much was each piece of Antron yardage wise vs the dye. example: one yard antron + one dye pack

Hahaha no this was done in the kitchen sinks, but yes, since they are stainless steel I'm pretty confident that no harm was done. I'm also generally very very careful about not making messes. You're right though, a porcelain sink or tub would be (likely) permanently stained by, say the purple, especially!

As far as sizing, they measure approximately 33"X28" each, so just under a square yard. I used one full dye pack for each in very hot water (almost couldn't put my hands in it) for approximately 20 minutes each then rinsed in warm water until they ran clear. I then carefully squeezed out as much as I could until it wasn't dripping any more, then put it in the dryer on the gentle cycle for about 20 minutes until it was just damp then hung it to dry the rest of the way. I didn't get any pilling at all, so I am very pleased.

As an aside, this was fleece bought from Puppet Mart as well =]

Wow, your dyed antron looks great! I've found it challenging sometimes to get the coloring even, most likely because I dye through dipping the fabric in. I think I'll try your method of just letting it sit next time Nice work!

Thanks gdub! What I actually did was dip the undyed fleece into the water that it was going to be dyed in before the dye was put in, then I put the fleece aside (don't wring any water out) while I added the dye to the water. I then mixed it thoroughly with a long spoon, then quickly dipped the dye in wet and began stirring it around in the sink every few minutes until about 20 minutes had passed.

Thanks again!

I bet it is going to be cheaper for you to purchase a dye locally. Have you checked to see if you have a dye brand in your country?
