eyes Posted by Sunbeatle Puppets on Jul 29, 2010
i know that this is a topic that has probably been discussed before, but i have lots of questions about eyes.
1. what do you use for your eyes?
2. do you cover them in white fabric, or paint them?
3. Do you use ffoam for eyelids, or just some sort of fabric?
4. how do you attach your eyes to the puppets head?
5. what do you do about pupils, drawn on? i have heard about self adhesive felt pads used for furniture that come in circles, any one use that? if so, where do you buy them?
ok, thats it thank you guys in advance for your feedback!

Yep you are right this has been discussed at length in the past. If I was really mean I would make you search them out.
1. A variety of techniques depending on the puppet. Most I paint a wood ball.
2. Yes to both. (see 1)
3. Yes to both. (see 1)
4. Stitch or glue depending on the eye. Some of the pre-made eyes actually have post you can insert through a hole with an attachment you add to the back to hold them in. You can get those at hobby and craft stores.
5. Again depends on what you want. There are many who really like the felt pads because they can apply them once the puppet is finished and eyeball attached.

1. Anything but the kitchen sink that resembles a eye.
2. All of the above.......... depends on the character
3.both
4. Most eyes come with fasteners but they can be glued, or sewn on to your puppet.
5. You can use a black sharpie, cut them from sheets of vinyl, craft foam, felt, or use the black circles in those cheap wiggly eyes. I sell complete eye kits that has everything you need all in one package.

For eyes I use ping-pong balls, plastic spoons, dome eyes (think Kermit) I buy from Puppet Mart in two sizes, and character eyes of different kinds I have bought from Out of the Box Puppets. There are also websites like Harveys Hobby Hut that carry a variety of eyes as well, even in bulk. In the spoons and ping pong balls I often use circles cut from black electrical tape (it forms around curves better than some of the thicker vinyls) or I use craft animal eyes with posts and drill a hole in the spoon or ping-pong ball that the post can slip through. For eyelids and lashes, I use different materials, felt or fleece or fun foam. The possibilities are really endless. You can even use colored pipe cleaners for eyeliner to accent the eyes and give them more character. I often paint dome or ping pong ball eyes with a matte white spraypaint made for plastics sold by Krylon.
Hope that gave you extra ideas =] Happy building!

The other day Jim Alser of www.tech-optics.com emailed me to ask if he could post about his eyes on the forum and I said sure. So far I have not seen him sign up but hopefully he well. These are very high end eyes and are really cool.

1. There are a number of things I use for eyes. My favorite would be the plastic half spheres with a doll joint. No glue, no mess.
2. I like to cover them partly in fabric, and use fun foam as an eye lash
3. Yes foam for eye lash
4. i try to use a doll joint when possible, if what i am using has stem already on it great, if not i try to glue a joint to the eye i am going to use, and then attach it to the puppet using the locking nut. No chance of getting glue on my puppet that way.
5. I have used felt pads that i buy at lowes or home depot.
