My First Melonhead Project Puppet Build... Posted by Gimpdiggity on Aug 05, 2010
Hi everyone.

I've made several of the Glorified Sock Puppet and have had the Melonhead pattern for a little while now.  Well, I finally finished the head and body on my first build with this pattern tonight.  I'll be working on clothing for him over the next few days.  I've got a really good idea for a shirt for him.

This is Vlad.

Vlad is a young vampire. He has a problem, though. He's hemophobic. That means he's scared of blood...the sight of it, the thought of it, everything about it just really creeps him out. Because of this, Vlad isn't very accepted by most of his kind. He still likes to dress up like a classical vampire, but he simply can't bring himself to have anything to do with blood.

Oh yah, his body isn't really that scrunchy...I found it fairly difficult to hold him in my hand, my camera in my other hand, and actually be able to see what I'm taking pictures of.

He's hemophobic.

No wonder he's so pale! (No wait, aren't vampires pale cause they can't go into the sun?)

I love the football shape of the head, you so rarely see that in muppet-type puppets.

Thanks.

I actually came up with the idea for doing a vampire after I got that material.  I wanted to do some "more human" type puppets, so I grabbed some light colored fabric from the store.  When I got home, I realized that it was a bit too pale to be a "human," and the idea for vampire jumped into my head almost instantly.

I haven't used the Melonhead pattern yet, but I do like all the other simple series patterns. I've been wondering if the melonhead could be accomplished simply by changing the shape of the roly or pinhead patterns and save myself the money!

Great job, by the way, I really like him! Is that regular polar fleece, or something else? I like the tiny little fangs =] what are they made from?

I would guess that you could probably adapt the Roly or Pinhead to get the Melonhead.  I can clearly see how the Melonhead and the Glorified Sock are related, so the Melonhead and the Roly are probably very, very similar.

It's Blizzard Fleece from JoAnn, which I was told is about the best fleece they sell regularly.  I've been using it for all of my puppets and it is really nice.  The fangs are just a couple of very tiny triangles of stiffened felt, glued into the mouth.

Thanks!!

Great job with not only building the puppet but also developing the character. I love the tiny fangs.

@April  I'm positive you can get many different looks by just tweaking the Roly pattern, which is the most basic of the foam shapes.

Blizzard and Polar fleece are both great in that they go on sale a lot too, so you can buy them for 40-50% off at Jo-Ann. You save a lot buying them then!

Thanks for all the comments, everyone.

The hair was the hardest part to work with on him.  It simply didn't want to work out the way I wanted it to.

I got some different fabric to do hair on the next one.  I already have a head made, I just need to add the details to it.  I don't know why, but when I start making puppets, I make two heads at the same time almost every time.  It's kind of odd, I guess.
