Re: Dyeing Fleece Posted by April Dawne on Aug 12, 2010
If I'm not mistaken, most if not all anti-pill/polar fleece won't take dye well because they are made from polyester, or polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It will likely come out lighter than you want no matter how long you leave it in the bath. Awhile ago I got in a few yards of what was supposed to be a "light tan" polar fleece that looked more like a faded light grey, which did not suit my needs at all. I tried dying it, and while it did change color, it was very subtle.
If you go to http://www.fabricdiva.com/Fleece_C40.cfm you can find, under Solid Color anti-pill fleece a very wide variety of colors; including light peach, camels, tans, etc. which would be good for human puppets. I have not yet seen a better variety of colors for fleece in one place, and most of it is $5.55 per yard. And check out the selection of pricier Specialty Fleece. I wouldn't mind trying some of that myself! =]

Re: Dyeing Fleece Posted by Sunbeatle Puppets on Aug 13, 2010
also another question can you dye white fur with rit dye?
Re: Dyeing Fleece Posted by Billy D. Fuller on Aug 13, 2010
As far a dyeing techniques Daryl has pretty much covered that in the videos above. I think his technique will work no matter what you are dyeing. You can use different type dyes such as Rit, Dylon, Procion.................. and other brands.

Different dyes work best on different fibers..................... but the answer to your question is yes. I would only dye fur if I could not find it in the color I wanted. They are so many colors to choose from these days.

I would add to what Billy said that there really is no magic or easy answer when it comes to dying things. You really just have to do a test run. You never know what that content of something is for sure or how it has been treated. For example I've dyed fur in the past and the base of the fabric has come out a rich color but the fibers of the fur strands have been very pastel or muted.

Another question so on the website it says for mixing, like, 1 teaspoon of this, 1/2 teaspoon of that, 1 cup water. do you pre mix that and then add it to the gallon of water? also is it a gallon of water per yard of fleece?

Watch Daryl's video again...................... as he said he was using the whole pack vs the recipe. Your answer is yes, you would premix the powder but not the liquid. Then add to the gallon of water and stir. Remember dye/water ratio determines how dark your colors will be and timing is a must. Document all dyeing on index cards for future reference.
