Re: Dyeing Fleece Posted by Sunbeatle Puppets on Aug 24, 2010
Ok, i am about to start dyeing one yard of anti-pill fleece and have a couple more questions. So i picked a color from the color chart http://www.ritdye.com/ColoRit_Color_Formula_Guide.96.lasso
i picked yellow 3 #298 which says that i need 1 teaspoon of Golden Yellow and 1 teaspoon of Tan. I got packs of powder fleece of both of these colors. So should i measure teaspoons of that, mix it with one cup of water, mix it into the gallon of hot water, and then put the fleece in?
sorry i just really don't want to mess this up, thank you!

The way I do it is I put my powder dye in a cup of water and heat it up in the micro wave until it has all dissolved. I then take a paper coffee filter and put it into a cup or bowl and secure it with a rubber band. Slowly pour your dye mixture into the cup or bowl with the filter....... this catches any sediments of dye that did not completely dissolve which could leave spots on the fabric. Discard the filter and your dye will be ready for you to pour into your dye bath. Once you have your dye bath ready make sure the fleece is completely wet... carefully wring out access water before submerging in dye bath. If you feel uncertain about things cut the selvages of each sides of the fabric and dye those first..... that way you cut strips and dye them by timing it by about every five minutes (write down your results) 5,10,or 15 minutes. If you feel comfortable then dye the rest of your fabric.
Go back and watch Daryl's video to refresh your self. Hope this helps.

Liquid is easier to work with just mix in a cup stir and mix with dye bath............... again wet your fabric before submerging in the dyebath.

I would like to add...................... I have not really looked at the Rit dye website in a while. They have increased there recipes for skin tones.

Thanks billy, and another thing, you said that traditionally its 1 gallon of water per yard, but in Daryl's video he uses 3 gallons of water. I'm confused :/

Follow the suggestion in the rit dyeing guide................... the recipes they give are to dye a 12" x 12" square of fabric.............. The more water you use the weaker the dye bath. There is no set rule to do this.................... My theory is if the fabric comes out to light you can always add more dye to your dye bath to make it darker.................. once it is to dark there is no coming back. read the instruction on the rite dye dyeing guide. What works for one person may not work for another. I use the low water immersion method but you have to be careful or your fabric will have a marbled effect. Three gallons and more dye is a safe way to do it............ but I think it is a waste of dye. I'm a cheap skate. LOL

SunBeattle I followed the RIT DYE instructions on the dye chart from there web page.....I kept it simple and straight forward for the video. So read the instructions and you will see what they say.
I also tell you to premix the powder then add it to the larger amount as Billly said.....your results may not be the same as with antron fleece because you are using materials that may not dye well at all.....it will look more pastel colours instead of bright vivid colours.
Why don't you try a little corner and do a mini dye in a jar or something and see how that goes before you do a whole piece.....that would be my suggestion.
