Glove Hand Puppets Posted by Sunbeatle Puppets on Aug 16, 2010
I have a question about glove hand puppets, which is hard for me to explain, but i'll try.
So, my question for all you guys who have made glove hand puppets is at what point of the arm does it transition to the glove. like, do you insert the glove at the wrist, or at the elbow?
Sorry for my lack of skill at explaining things, but hopefully someone will understand what i'm trying to say :/

i would put it at the elbow that way you have more room to play with

thats what i was thinking but i just also thought maybe it would look awkard not being able to put the arm straight out because the puppet is above you but i do think the elbow would be better and give the puppet much more freedom

I would agree with jovack. I have 4 glove hand puppets, 3 are designed with the performers hand coming in at the elbow.
The only one that isn't is my character Fang, his are at the wrist. This is because with his arms, I designed them to be thin tubes approx. 1-1/2"
diameter so this design deligated how/where the performers hand would be attached. I hope that makes sense?!?!

yes that does make sense thank you!

I have another question for everyone about the glove arm. Do you make the Glove seperate, and then attach it to the other 'limp' part of the arm, or do you make it as one piece (which i don't understand how you could, so if you do, an explanation?) and if you attach it could you please explain how?
Thank you!!

Imagine putting one of your long sleeved shirts on your puppet and adding gloves to the end of the sleeves so you can put your hands in. This is basically how glove arms work. Some people convert there regular armed puppets into glove puppets by using the shirt method. Now if your puppet did not have arms you would just add to sleeves and gloves and yes attach at shoulders. Does this make sense.

umm, i think so? so you don't stuff the part of the arm that isnt the glove at all, but is it all one piece? and you could attach it with say, a doll joint just like a normal arm?

that depends on how you want to make it................. some people stuff the upper part of the arm and make the entrance where the hand is while others don't stuff the arm and make the entrance at the shoulder. These type arms do not require doll joints. I'll try and draw you a picture later when I have a chance.

I made Eyegore where my hands go in at the wrists and the whole arm above that is stuffed with polyfill. I also made the entrance for where my hand goes in to be a tube. Hopefully between that description and these pictures you'll understand. Unfortunately I haven't taken any pictures that specifically show off that part of him. I can do so this afternoon if needed, though.
