I just wrote a post on "A forum is Born" about macs Imovie a downsized version of final cut Pro.  It comes free with a mac and I have upgraded it several times.  you can see what edits are available by looking at my last wo videos.  However if you have a PC that won't help other than confirming what you have as being equivalent or substandard.  I actually would like to try another program just to have some production variety.  Andrew, witch ones would you say are good alternatives to Imovie.  What more do they offer. (I don't want to spend a lot) my memory is fading.Computer memory that is. 

If you used movie maker you  will be PC right? Wax2.0 is a freebee and will do compositing, but only deals with AVI.

videoPad Video editor has a free version. It is much like  Movie maker, but has two audio tracks  plus the video audio, and it has an overlay track so you can superimpose stuff.Its only 3.8mb.

Lightworks, has a free version. I have downloaded it but not used it as the computer I downloaded it to  was not wizzy enought to run it. But it looks interesting so check it out.

One free post production special effects type thing  my son just told me about is http://jefecheck.jefecorp.com/index.html It requires 64bit windows7 to run. sounds wizzy but I have not tried it yet. It  will do 4k stuff...but works with image sequences. It is cross platform so is supposed to work with Mac, and Linux too. I will download it and give it a try and let you know what I think.

I bought Adobe After Effects 6.5 with addin for $60... Great deal...great software.  It came with Keylight which is super for green screening.  When the new ones come out the pros get rid of their "old" versions.
