Teaching 5-7 year olds about puppets. Posted by frankiel on Aug 18, 2010
In the english national curriculum in the design technology subject there is a unit on puppets.
As part of my training i have to make a resource to inspire children and other teachers to engage in the topic.
My Resource as it stands is a puppet with changeable features that children can explore how to create different characters by using different features.
My end goal is to create a whole bank of resources so any ideas would be hugely appreciated. My next resource is hopefully going to be a collection of videos to show the process in making a puppet. these would be used as lesson starters.
D&T teaching is taught in 3 different sections,
Design- i will show the children how a puppet can be designed ( showing the materials and colours used)
FPT (Focused Practical Tasks)- These are a collection of activities that help build confidence and skills before it comes to make the final product. so this could be the use of my first resource, sewing techniques, creating eyes making other facial features and a collection of methods on how to join the materials.
Make- this section of D&T is where the children actually make their puppet.
Hopefully i can make a video/ DVD on showing how these sections are important to when it comes to creating puppets!
I would really appreciate any ideas from any of you as you all are very talented and very inspiring to learn from!
This started out as research for my project but now i am so excited to begin to make loads of puppets!
