Did you know you could be revealing your address in your photos? Posted by Shawn on Aug 22, 2010
I know that posting images of your puppets has become very popular both here and other places, and in fact posting pictures in general on the world wide web is pretty common now. Did you realize that you could be giving out your home address when you post them? There is a feature on most phones that take pictures and on many digital cameras called geo tagging that actually embeds the longitude and latitude of where the image was taken into the image itself. This information can be easily read by anyone. I personally am not too concerned by it but thought it was worth passing on the information to others. Here at Puppets and Stuff when you upload an image to the Gallery, this info is wiped from the thumbnail images that are created to reduce the size but it could still be in the original image you uploaded.

I just saw a video on video on face book on a similar topic. I'm with Shawn not worried to much......got nothing to hide. If they want to watch a poor middle class over grown boy make puppets let 'em at it. LOL

I don't have anything fancy enough to embed that info into my pics, lol. My camera and phone just aren't that smart.

The Facebook video raises some very good questions. I really love the internet and feel that it's advantages out weigh the disadvantages but the bottom line is that nothing that you post via the internet is truly secure and safe. Once you hit that submit button it is out of your control. If you like the color red but don't want people to know that then don't post it. Forum software like that used here on Puppets and Stuff takes certain measures to help control access to the information you post but there are no guarantees. If a hacker wanted what is in the databases here they could get it. The bottom line though is that with the safe gaurds used, it would take some time and effort and quite frankly the benefit from hacking a site like Puppets and Stuff do not pay off well enough. Hackers much rather spend the time trying to access the servers for your bank or credit card company. Now there is a pay off.
I prefer to not live in fear behind closed doors so don't give it too much thought. I am smart though about my habits when surfing or emailing. I am not going to give out my SSN over the internet or click on links in emails that claim to lead to accounts I have. I open up my web browser and go to the site to check if the claim is true. I avoid such things as "You are a winner! Click Here!" or "Claim Your Money!" etc. The old saying "If it sounds to good to be true then it is." is a good thing to keep in mind when on the internet.
You know those folks who introduce themselves and say they have been a member for a while but just now posting? I think that is a good thing. In fact if I came to Puppets and Stuff for the first time, more then likely I would poke around in the forums and see what others are posting just to get a feel for how the site works before I even sign up. You can get a pretty good feel for a place just by sitting back and "listening".

Interesting and a bit creepy. Luckily my digital camera is too old to have that feature and I don't even have the feature to get photos off of my camera.

The Facebook video info is the same for YouTube and any other social networking network on the Internet.....just saying.

You are right Daryl. Every site on the internet collects basic information on your visits by default. For example even here at PandS a log is kept of every request that has your IP and the time of access. There is also the information you provide in your profile. I don't sell or give the information to anyone but often larger sites well share that information with their affiliates or sister of parent companies and you never really know what those associations are for sure.
