Who Nose Posted by Billy D. Fuller on Sep 02, 2010
I'm just a bit nosy as to what type materials do you use to make your puppets noses. What technique do you use to attach the nose to your puppet. Is there a special stitch you use to sew a nose on to the face of your puppet. What are some safety features you add to noses to make them child proof.

Usually I just make the nose out of foam and glue it on and stitch the fleece onto the face with whatever stitch seems appropriate for the shape. As for making them child proof... Well, I don't make puppets to be child proof. lol

I know you can use Nerf balls, smaller foam balls, sculpted foam, fabric stuffed with poly fill, I use my 450mm & 650mm acrylic eyes covered with fabric if I want them really secured. I was just curious as to how folks make the different type noses. Facial features like eyes and noses really make the character.

That is the hardest question every puppet has a unique look and whatever fits that look and character will be what goes on it.
I have used many thing such as cover buttons in different sizes, foam carved and covered or just dyed, wooden balls or super balls covered, buttons, stuffed fabric, noses off of toys sometimes I make one out of Crayola Model Magic and dipped it in Plastidip....on and on and on.

I have used preformed noses, styrofoam, fabric, etc.
I sew the fabric nose and ears into the head, unless I am making a "button" type nose. Then I hand stitch it.
The rest I hot glue.
Our motto is that puppets are tools not toys, so don't make them child proof.
