Zombie Newbie to the Puppeting world Posted by Zombie Rodent on Sep 26, 2010
Hi there!
My name is Natalia and I want to make me a zombie puppet! Just to let you know about me, I am an artist, I do mostly fantasy and horror stuff, and I have been interested in puppets from an early age. I adored Jim Henson and watched the Muppet Show and Fraggle rock all the time as a kid. My favorites of his works are Labyrinth, Dark Crystal and his Storyteller series, and I had hoped to someday work for him. when he died I was crushed. Growing up my love of puppetry distorted into special effects make-up, mostly monster stuff, and I dabbled around with that for a bit before going into more traditional art such as painting and sculpting. Anyways to try an already long story a bit shorter, I watched this: this and finally this
After watching this stuff my first thought was "I want to make a zombie puppet, Dagnabbit!" Mostly I want to make a puppet of the mascot for the Zombiewalk that I coordinate. His name is Bob. Problem is I have no idea of how to do the mechanics. I kinda want to make a sorta spring and wire mechanic to make the head but I have no idea how to do that. So.. Can anyone help me? Please? O_o

Welcome to PandS Zombie Rodent.
There are a couple of folks that have tinkered with cable wire puppet or animatronics like you want to do. The "secret" is bicycle cables or the ones used in model airplanes that you fly. A search on "blinking eyes" might bring up some past threads that could be useful to you. The word "cable" might even bring up some.

I almost forgot. Dr Puppet has some videos that you can download for a modest fee at his site. http://www.drpuppet.com/video_tutorial_page_1.html Two of them are about mechanics for moveing eyes and eye brow. They might be helpful for you to understand how things can be built to move.
