Sewing Machine - Tutorials, How Tos, etc. Posted by Pdyx on Sep 27, 2010
I haven't had much time to be on the puppet forums lately, I've missed the positivity and awesome puppet stuff. Life's been hectic. Dealing with work and I'm about to move and lots of other stuff. Hope everyone is fine and I can catch up on the forum after the move.
I have a quick question. Does anyone know of any resources, tutorials, guides, etc. to teach one to sew using a machine? My fiancee has been doing all of our machine sewing. We own a Singer machine I bought her for her birthday so we could make puppets. She, however, is back at school, she just started Seminary a few weeks ago. We're trying to make a bunch of puppets for an art fair in December and while she'll be able to help out, I think it will make it easier if I can learn to use the machine. I can hand-sew a simple whip-stitch and I've got to be decent at that. She's shown me the machine once and I've watched her, but I'm ready to take the plunge after the move and try to learn to sew on a machine. We have some 'test fabric' that I can sew away on. Any advice on getting started on the machine? She's real busy with school and she will have some time to teach me, but I thought it'd be good to supplement with other resources if they exist.

Hi Pdyx, if you'll go to youtube and type in sewing or beginner sewing there are lots of tutorials there to get you started. Best of luck! It'll be so much easier and quicker once you learn sewing!

Three words.... practice, practice, practice. Ok that is technically one word repeated three times. Really sewing is pretty basic when it comes to puppets and practiceing well get you comfortable with the machine. On your test fabric draw lines that curve and pratice fallowing the line. You can also cut the fabric in curves to get the hang of things. Why curves... well I think that is the hardest to get the hang of.

I agree with Shawn practice and make mistakes. I learn sewing on a very old machine with no electric. The one your grandmother used.
Practice with left overs. old t-shirts that kind of stuff. You have to try it, do it and learn !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU CAN DO IT
