Independent Head. Posted by Sunbeatle Puppets on Sep 27, 2010
Hey guys, so i made my first foam head puppet with the roly pattern from Project Puppet, and it works great, except that when the head moves, the body moves, which i don't really like. So i had an idea, i think i could some how use the fabric body pattern as a sleeve, and attach that to the inside of the foam body, so then it would have independent movements. So, has anyone tried this with a PP pattern, and if so did it work?? also, do you think it would work?

I haven't done this specifically with a pp pattern, but I do make my puppets that way.  I think it would work.  You would have to make the body a little bigger I think, but try it out if you have the supplies.

I did exactly that with my new "larger" puppet.

Basically, I made the Project Puppet pattern and used the optional body, but then I sewed the standard body that comes with every puppet to the head.  I then connected the "original body" to the bottom of the "optional body" and it made a sleeve inside it with the head separate.

There's a YouTube video that shows it.

I tried to embed it on the page, but it doesn't want to work.

gimpdiggity what a great puppet you made, what a great idea's. I mean especially with the head you can work with in two ways.
I really, really love this. Thanks for sharing.................

Thanks!!!

He presented some different things that needed to be worked around, but I'm happy with how he turned out.  He's my "prototype" for that design, so a few things will change on any more that are produced...mainly, I've got a better idea for the opening at the neck where his head comes out of his body.  From certain angles you can see the foam that he's made out of now, but the improved idea will eliminate any of that.

Sweet! I've been waiting for somebody to do this and post about it. Great work guys!

The concept was alluded to in the "Seeds for Experimentation" box of the Simple Series Alternate Body Pattern instructions, but I think this is the first time (or at least that I have come across) that somebody has posted about using the patterns this way. A lot of thought and planning and designing goes into the Project Puppet patterns and I absolutely love it when they are used to their full potential!

Pasha, that's how I got the idea to do it.  I remembered reading that in the instructions and figured I'd give it a shot.  Worst case scenario it didn't work and I'd have to modify the whole thing, but no real modifications were necessary, short of leaving the "sleeve" part of the bottom of the optional body off.  I left that off and instead just hooked the standard body directly to the bottom of the optional body.

It accomplished a couple of things for me...first off it gave me the independent head that I was looking for, and it also gave me a fleece lined inside of the puppet, which I was also looking for.

Thanks so much Gimpdiggity! i have a few questions, first, did you have to make the foam body any bigger to do this? and what do you use to snap the back of the neck back together, and what do you use to clip on the legs? haha, sorry but there are just so many great ideas i want to understand how they work!
Re: Independent Head. Posted by Gimpdiggity on Sep 28, 2010
No, the body is actually smaller than standard.  I found that I had to cut it a bit shorter at the top to make it work.

The next time I do this puppet, I won't do that...I will compensate for the difference by making the sleeve on the "standard" body a bit longer.

The snap for the back of the neck is just a snap!!  I had to buy a tool that's like a set of pliers to get it to work.

The things for the legs are some clips that I found at JoAnn.  I will be honest, I know where they were at, but I have no idea what they are really for.  They look like shirt stays, but much shorter and the clips look more heavy duty.

ok, so you didn't actually do any resizing of the pattern? and by snap do you mean like, snap buttons, like on little kids pants :P?
thanks
