Keeping Mouth Shut? Posted by Sunbeatle Puppets on Sep 29, 2010
hey guys so as you might now i made my first foam head puppet with the Roly Puppet Pattern from PP recently, and i've noticed that while i perform him, its really hard to keep his mouth closed for more than a few seconds. I'm wondering if this happens to you guys when using simple series patterns or if i just did something wrong?
Thanks!

this happens, i think to everyone.. its not the pattern it has do with muscle strength hope this helps

you think so? maybe i just have weak hands :/ but i thought it might be because of the foam mouth piece that kind of makes the mouth spring open.

Most puppets are designed so that the mouth is naturally open which means during performance you have to keep the mouth closed by "force".  Practice well strengthen your hand muscles and it well get easier.

Try squeezing a rubber ball, or put sand in a balloon, tie it off and squeeze. When I am training a new team I tell them to carry the squeeze ball everywhere. When they are sitting at red lights, sitting in traffic, etc. is a great time to build the hand muscles.
