cutting knitted tube scarf Posted by stvnhthr on Oct 07, 2010

I would like to cut a section of a knitted tube scarf to use as hair and a neck ring.  Is this possible without the whole scarf unraveling?  Would hot glue hold the knit together?  Bias tape?  Sewing it directly to the fleece?

Thanks,
Steve

Hmmm.... without seeing the scarf it is hard to say for sure but a couple things come to mind. One since it is a tube you could turn it inside out and then sew a line across the tube then cut of the end and turn right side out.  This should give you a cap of sorts you could use as hair. I am assuming the the scarf is open on the ends but it may not be.  I would not use hot glue or any type of glue really to seal it.  Sewing it to a piece of fleece or other fabric should work fine for you.  You should also be able to seal or bind any cut edges with bias tape.  If the scarf is open on each end, can you tell how it is finished on the end?  If the scarf is knitted then is should be a continuous length of yarn.  When you cut it, then you should see an end that you could knot off.

P.S.  Welcome to Puppets and Stuff!  I just realized this was your first post.   Make yourself at home.  Stop by the Introduction forum and let us know more about yourself... don't worry we don't bite although some of our puppets might.

Thanks, I'll post an introduction once my puppet is done and I get all the hot glue off my fingers.

Here are pics of sample tube scarves

I have two different kinds, one closed end and one open end.  I'm most interested in using the open ended scarf for this project, it is knitted like a net.  So cutting across it would sever several different interwoven threads.  What ever machine was used to produce it put a special finishing stitch on the two ends of the scarf, any cutting would produce at least one unfinished edge.  It only cost fifty cents at the thrift store so I can afford to ruin it, but I doubt I could find a similar item to replace it.

I agree with Shawn I would turn it inside out and sew it reinforcing it with a strip of cloth. Sew double seams so you can cut in the middle of the strip of fabric. Sew a zig zag stitch first followed by a straight stitch down the middle of that zig zag stitch. This should hold both pieces together where you cut. Welcome To Puppets and Stuff.

This is my first puppet.  He is not done.  I'm still trying to figure out the tube scarf, I may have to have my wife show me how to use the zig zag stitch setting on our sewing machine.

I sewed another one today, but I don't have any more eyes.  Once I get to the craft store I should be able to finish them both up.
